Re: Pics of second release Kate are up..

We have made this INJ Light Gray. I am still waiting for a confirmation from our Japanese expert but he has not replied yet. It could be a greenish gray (Nakajima style) as you mentioned.

William,
The underside color was not painted light gray according to the relics that have been found. WWII Japanese Navy aircraft that were painted from the factory were pale olive gray close to FS-24201 on the underside. Mitsubishi was a little more green and Nakajima was a little more tan. The cowling color should be a little more black than what the pre-pro photos show unless it is being represented as severely weathered. Are the back sides of the propellor blades painted dark brown as they should be?
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

The back side of the propeller is painted Dark Brown. We have changed the color of the Engine Cowling a bit using "Mr. Color H125" as the reference.

For the underside, I think I can trust you on this since you have done all the readings.

Thank you very much indeed.

William

Hard points for weapons off center would probably have to do with the bombadiers aiming sight with is just right of center. If weapon load were centered it would obscure bomb aimers site. Does look just a little bit off,

Re: Pics of second release Kate are up..

I wanted one packing a bomb and one packing a torpedo,,,,,, maybe a third one if they come out with three.

Or may be an anti-sub plane, circa 1945, with depth charges?

The Kate with depth charges,,, oh yeah. That would make for a unique variant of the Kate.

Chris,

I would like to draw a conclusion early. Unfortunately, I have a reply from the Japan side today :

The body lower part color of the airplane of the Japanese Navy is IJN gray.

The greenish gray is the opinion which appeared recently, but conclusive evidence is low.

Please paint it with IJN gray.

Re: Pics of second release Kate are up..

Colorwise, things seem a bit debatable, and having no special knowledge on the topic, I'll be satisfied with what we are getting. Maybe some day a definitive color scheme everyone can agree on will be produced. Hopefully, despite the color debate, this release will break the mold, and more Japanese types will come rolling out.

William,
Who is your Japanese expert? We may know him. Can he produce any evidence that light gray is correct? I will ask Jim Lansdale for his color photographs of the relic samples he owns and other conclusive evidence and extensive research that supports the fact that the underside color is pale olive gray. Japanese WWII aircraft colors are indeed controversial but I thought that at least HM (a seemingly very progressive company) would finally correct this long misguided tradition of using light gray incorrectly in this new release of HM's first of many (I hope) Japanese WWII models. The latest research should be used. I'm sure that Jim would be pleased to be another one of your Japanese WWII Naval aviation camouflage and marking experts if you let him (he is known world wide and utilized by museums and authors around the country).
Thanks for trying,
Chris
