The 3rd 1/32 Dauntless

Haven't seen any discussion about it yet.

Anyone else disappointed about this one? The first two schemes are Dauntlesses that haven't been done before in any other scale. This one is already out on the HM mould in 1/72 via Corgi and on the 1/48 FM mould. Since I have the Predators version I'm highly unlikely to pick this one up unless they are going cheap on Ebay.

Re: The 3rd 1/32 Dauntless

I am not disappointed in this scheme. I am just happy that they are doing an SBD-5 in the tri-color scheme.

They seem to be following their pattern with the previous two 1/32 Dauntlesses of releasing airplanes that are more historically significant rather than being the most colorful scheme available. The first was Wade McCluskey's SBD-3 from the Battle of Midway, where he led the Enterprise air group to the Japanese fleet. The second is the delivery scheme of SBD-2 #2106 which survived Pearl Harbor and Midway, and survives on display at the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. This third release was the SBD-5 of Major Elmer Glidden, the leading USMC dive bomber pilot of WW2, who served at Midway, Guadalcanal, etc. So, I kind of like that they are going with these historic schemes--- and for what it's worth, I think they look good as well.

I like this version but will hold out for a "Battle of the Coral Sea" version with red and white rudder stripes and 1941 national insignias with red circles in the middle of the stars.

Now that would be an excellent livery to go with. I really like the earlier markings.

Brewster Buffalo, Hawk 75A, Fokker D.XXI, Polikarpov I-16, Fiat G.50, Macchi C. 200, PZL P.11c, Fieseler Fi 156 Storch ,,,, now those are real planes.

Re: The 3rd 1/32 Dauntless

I have the FM version already, and I'm sort of out of room for more 1:32 SBDs now -- that said, the history behind this model makes it an excellent choice. If you remember when HM first started they tended to put out more obscure models first, which may have been cool to see by long-time collectors but the more "mainstream" liveries/pilots is probably a healthier starting point.

I would probably have to make room for a Coral Sea version as Lanslide notes below.

I dunno, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were.

Re: The 3rd 1/32 Dauntless

I dig this scheme... a lot. The minute I saw it, I threw it on my wish list. However, check out Hawk's site... the release has apparently been post-poned one month, so it looks like a September U.S. release. A lot can happen to a wish list in 5 months.
