I'm guessing that fine of detail, at 1/72 scale, would have increased the cost of the producing the model by quite a bit. HM probably would have had to use photo-etched metal for detail that fine, so they just chose to represent that area with ribs instead.

IMHO, it would have been better to leave them flat. Those oversized ribs just don't look good

After all you can only do so much with a 1:72nd scale Phantom.

Re: Pics: HM Phantom "Ritchie" HA1901

Never noticed the ribs until Nockers mentioned it but they really don't detract from the overall looks of the model. Macro shots definitely emphasize them. Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like Corgi's F-4s have more prominent ribs along the intake ramps. Can anyone do a comparison pic?

Careful when fitting the bomb clusters, first one I attached fell apart. Yep they are made up of 8 finely detailed pieces. Ran a line of micro weld over 2nd cluster, then re-built 1st. no great problem. Fine looking model. Good plastic content makes it a little lighter than I would have thought.

Re: Pics: HM Phantom "Ritchie" HA1901

Had a chance to see this today at Burbank's House of Hobbies. Very nice.

If you are considering this I would suggest you not wait. I discovered to my chagrin that I had forgotten to pre-order this and it is sold out at HM and the hobby shop was out of stock with all the pre-orders and probably will not get any more.

I think it will probably go pretty fast so don't delay.

I'm on it!

Just an idea or suggestion to William: maybe HM might want to consider adding those ribbing details by pad printing graphics instead on the succeeding releases of the Phantoms?

My thoughts exactly. I had a brain surge overnight as I was thinking on this problem

Also... turbines in the intakes would be the Phantom's meow. With these two changes, I would be highly motivated to buy an HM Phantom. Right now, I am waiting to see what Gemini and Century will do.

Re: Pics: HM Phantom "Ritchie" HA1901

I'm guessing HM and Corgi copied the same kit, which has ribbed intakes, or:

The mold-maker interpreted the reference drawing incorrectly, and made the rib-area 3D, when the lines on the drawing were merely intended to represent the border of the bleed holes.

F-15's suffer a similar issue--you'll find almost EVERY model and drawing of an F-15 has a "panel line" on it where none exists--because it LOOKS like there is one in nearly every photo, but it's really just a spot where dirt collects in a distinct pattern.
