Re: Helldiver 1/72 scale in the works

This is not a metal but not a plastic kit as well. It is made of some materials used for prototype building (I foret the English name of it).

clay?

Re: Helldiver 1/72 scale in the works

Nice to see that a prototype for the Helldiver is already in the works. Is any or part of this prototype resin?

This is all made up of a special kind of clay.

Thats interesting, I remember seeing something similar with concept car design models initial designs being produced out of clay.

Question Re: Helldiver 1/72 scale in the works

Concerning the dive brakes. Would it be possible to include the option of displaying the model with the dive brakes either open or closed? I don't mean operating dive brakes, as that may lead to unacceptable gaps and a clunky mechanism. I mean a set of closed brakes that one would fit on the wing and another set of open brakes that could be used instead.

Re: Helldiver 1/72 scale in the works

Just a preview of the prototype we made.

Holes are too many and too small to make the dive brake perforated. Photo-etched parts?

I'd vote against photo-etch as it is too fragile, and go with closed flaps. Open holes are not that big a concern for me if the dive breaks are shown deployed. But I prefer them closed. However shouldn't the cowl flaps be closed for a in flight model? It sure looks good, can't wait.

Re: Helldiver 1/72 scale in the works

Photo etch does not have to be fragile. It depends on the thickness of the material, the kind of material, etc. Also, it might depend on how it mounts on the airplane. You could engineer into photo etched divebrakes strong tabs to mount onto the wing. Admittedly, the etched divebrakes would be more sturdy closed, but could be made non-fragile nonetheless. I personally think that photo etched dive brakes would look great on this Helldiver. It would provide for a really spectacular touch of detail.

Re: Helldiver 1/72 scale in the works

Clay modeling is used throughout the automotive industry for vehicle prototyping. Pretty much every vehicle you see on the road today started out as a clay model (the rough form is actually machined to a final shape from computer models). It's inexpensive and relatively quick for producing models of various scales and it is easy to modify existing models. Really a neat process...

My biggest complaint is that the clay sticks to the bottom of your shoes like crazy if the designers don't clean up after themselves (it can also melt if it gets too warm).
