Bf 110 retractable tail wheel??

Today I finally figured out what this extra part was that came with my HM Bf 110. It fits perfect where the tail wheel goe and seems to be for depicting tail wheel being retracted. To the best of my knowledge, the Bf 110 had a fixed landing gear. After going through my reference material I pretty much confirmed that with the exception of the Bf 110V 1, all production models of the Bf 110 had a non retractable tail wheel. Just curious if anyone picked up on this.

Re: Bf 110 retractable tail wheel??

I have mine displayed "in flight" with the tail wheel down. I had thought it was fixed, but wasn't completely
sure, so you confirmed it for me CC. Thanks.

As we discussed before, I didn't get the folded tailwheel, just an empty slot in the bubble wrap. Wonder when they discovered the error?

Now I am really curious. We might have to see if Hawk can chime in on this one. It would be interesting to know if yours came minus the part because the error had been found.

Just think, those who got a retracted tail wheel might REALLY have a collector's model...like getting a twenty dollar bill with a picture of Grant on it...

Mine came with both, wheels down and a cover for wheels up. But personally I don't have a problem with this because I just stuck the rear wheel in place and it looks fine. What would have really got to me is if there wasn't a wheels down version provided.

All very interesting. The decision to delete the gear up must have come fairly early in the life of the model run, and it would be nice to know what knowledgeable person finally alerted HM. Personally, I wouldn't have known the difference.

I had contacted Hawk several weeks back in regards to the aileron balances being on backwards. He responded that he passed on the information to the HM folks but the production run had already started for the first Bf 110. I wonder if somebody noticed the tail wheel issue or if it was caught internally by HM.

My mass balances are still backward (had to look) and I didn't get the extra tail wheel, so the tail correction must have happened before they got the word on the balances (I think). (By the way, the mass balances don't bother me since about a fourth of my WWII models have the same error!)

Maybe we need to start a new thread called "Uncovering Diecast Mysteries".

Hope it gets fixed on the next Bf 110 though. After what you put down about the aileron balances on some of you aircraft, just had to see if any of mine were that way. The ones in my collection that have that detail are Corgi Bf 109s & Ju 87, Dragon Ju 87, HM Ju 87 and IXO Bf 110. Fortunately they are all facing the proper direction.
