Re: HM 1/32 SBD almost here??

For the price you pay for it...Sure it should of been better...But it was a easy fix for the prop with me anyway because my pin was a little long and i took it off
and filed it down and you guys seen the results...Honest if that prop was not diecast it wouldn't of droped like that...That little hub spinner is a little heavy too.
To correct these make a plastic prop and hub spinner and sub-contract out with 21st for the pilot figures..
JP

I like the method of filing down the pin, more than replacing the metal prop with a plastic prop. I am sure it is heavy; GMP put a heavy non-drooping prop on its P-40s. I feel confident that HM can fix this. Will they contract out with 21st for pilot figures? Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!

Re: HM 1/32 SBD almost here??

I just think when you're paying well over a hundred bucks for a model, you shouldn't have to be taking anything apart and reaching for your file to fix such an obvious production flaw..I'm glad it appears to be an easy fix, but that just goes to show they could have easily made it right in the first place.

Like some of you, I for one, don't mind modifying and repairing diecast (undoubtedly because I spent so many years building models), but there are a lot of guys out there who are uncomfortable about doing such things, and they shouldn't have to.

oh, and I forgot to mention the stand, for that kind of money they couldn't even throw in a crummy display stand?...oh well, one nice thing about it is it makes it real easy to decide how to display it then. That was my one real issue with Carousel 1...Why offer optional (or retractable) gear if you're not going to give us any way to display it "inflight"?....makes no sense to me.........but then again, I'm just a crotchety old faht.

Re: HM 1/32 SBD almost here??

Was really hoping to get one of these, but...
Skunky speaks words of truth.
The way I work the math...
No display stand + drooping prop + mini-crew + jumbo price tag = No sale

Perhaps by the time the Coral Sea version comes out, HM will have corrected these and I can part with my $$$ in good conscious.

In the meantime, my HM 1:72 SBD Midway will do just fine.

Re: HM 1/32 SBD almost here??

Well, I'm going to save my assessments until I have seen the thing first hand, which I was hoping would be this week... hmmm.... I can think of many models commanding high prices that have similar issues -- take the Flying Mule FW, for example, sure it was orignially $30 but folks are paying $150 or so for it now, and most have a droopy spinner, which is a common issue with Corgi FWs. And corgi's 1:32 crew figures are nearly as atrocious, to me, at least -- though at least they are the right scale I suppose. Yes, they are $30.. but then there's those plastic gear struts in the Corgi 1:32 Hurris...

Bugs will be ironed out with subsequent releases, and there is always a penalty it seems, regardless of brand almost, for being "early adopters" -- but thank-god for the early adopters that don't take these hunks of metal overly seriously, as they assure the release of more versions of existing molds that gradually get more refined -- in some cases. HM at least does try to fix errors, others continue to pump 'em out with repaints with their heads in the sand. I do wish there were a display stand included, as the price point seems to command its inclusion. HM has listened to such requests in the past, so if it's feasible to them, maybe they'll do it -- or at least offer one one it's own at a later date, like Witty does now.

This is a hobby, and is supposed to be "fun" so forgive me if I don't join the "critics". I appreciate our brothers in zinc across the pond, I just think at times this whole hobby is taken a bit too seriously. For me there are no deal breakers in what I've heard about it so far. Though, I also collect Franklin Mint, so perhaps my standards are just lower.

Re: HM 1/32 SBD almost here??

I need more 1/32 birds like I need another hole in the head. They take up tons of space. This one costs way more than any of the three 1/32 Corgi models I have. And I try to never buy the first generation of something, be it diecast or cars.

Still I ordered this one and it should be here tomorrow. I figured with the low production run I could sell it and break even on it if I decided I didn't want one. If I need the space I'll liquidate one of my Corgi Hurricanes. The subject matter is a better fit for my core collection of carrier based aircraft than the Hurricane anyway. McClusky is one of the big names from Midway and his actions of June 4th had a decisive impact on the battle. As a symbol of the battle you can't do much better, though I think the more important aircraft was the one flown by Best as his decision doomed Akagi and ensured the Japanese defeat.

Hobby Master is being very aggressive with their asking price for this model. They won that bet since they sold the production run. If we start to see these in stock at most dealers we will know the dealers got burned on them which will mean leaner orders for future releases.

I can definitely appreciate that, Pappy. and although I don't consider myself a major rivet counter, I am somewhat of a stickler for quality and value.
There is no perfect "anything" out there, but I think we can thank the critics for driving the manufacturers to do better.

Yes, this is a fun hobby, and every aspect of it should be fun....even grousing about it with our fellow collectors. When all is said and done, we each alone decide what is and is not a deal breaker. But with everybody out there (especially the oil companies) digging their hands deeper and deeper into my pocket these days, I really want all the warts exposed before I hand over whatever "disposable income" I have left. (and that goes with everything, not just diecast).

So I guess I'm saying, as much as I appreciate the cheerleaders, please don't hold back the critics.....They're helping me to make an informed decision, not telling me what to decide.
