Re: Old Crow P-39 anyone else think so??

Let me know what you find out. As much as a new bird to add to the line up of other Old Crows would be great. I think you and I will have to do the conversion. It certianly would be better than a RAF bird that flew one mission before being scrapped.

Will do.

Shawn,

Here's the answer from Jim Anderson, Col. Anderson's son:

"The 363rd P-39s had a red nose band, but they did not paint the tail sections. The 362nd FS had yellow nose bands and painted the whole tail section white. I believe the 364th their tail sections yellow."

It may not be as colorful as say a red tail section, but I'm probably going to follow the information above for my "Old Crow" P-39.

Red nose band, ok. How big/thick, location? Where do we find the decals? If you find a pic, please pass it on. I'm clueless on aircraft markings.

Let me see what I can come up with.

If anyone has Bud Anderson's "To Fly and Fight", you'll find a picture in there of the original P-39 Old Crow.

Planejunky, thanks for reminding me! I have this book and the BW picture that JP posted, and then removed, was the same picture shown in the book. The issue is, Accurate Miniatures and Hasegawa both released a P-39 in "Old Crow" markings, but both had different paint schemes and different colors for the squadron badge. Now that I've talked with Col. Anderson's son, Jim, I'm pretty confident as to what needs to be done to the plane. Jim provided one explanation as to why there has been so much confusion surrounding this airplane "As Merle [Olmsted] always said, a photo is just a snap shot in time. It could be different the next day."

Guys, "To War With The Yoxford Boys" has some nice rare color pics that should help, particularly with the red band question. I may try this repaint myself one day, but 'till then, here you go! Note that both planes pictured have a mix of squadron colors, so pay close attention to JIm Anderson's words from Tundra's post above.

That's a great picture of the P-39 near Mt.Shasta ...
I look at Mt.Shasta every day in my back window..
I was told at one time Redding & Oroville had these P-39's here
during the war.

Re: Old Crow P-39 anyone else think so??

Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces #36 - P-39 Airacobra Aces of World War 2, has a color profile of Bud Anderson's P-39Q-10 42-20746 OLD CROW on page 26, color plate 21. All olive drab. Only color is a red band just behind the spinner. White '152' on the nose and the door has a yellow circle emblem with the skull head pierced by a sword. "OLD CROW" is in very small letters low on the nose below the tactical number.
