Russian P-39 critique

Boy the box is tiny!
Plane is nice
Great paint
Small stenciling nice
instruments on the dash finally!
I can put a dab of black to represent guns
pilot is tiny tiny tiny
I tried to put him in my MP Peashooter
He nearly fit
He is now in a Dragon Wildcat
The P-39 was rather small in real life I guess
smaller than a P-40
and a F4-F
pilot is tiny
a Lilliputian
I hate the two holes in the fuselage for the canopy
they are large and unrealistic
why put in a stick, pilot, and instruments just to do that with those holes?
and the pegs show very obviously from the side on the clear plastic canopy
look like the police lights they put on the dash of Kojak 's car but clear
wish Hm could engineer a different solution on it's models
overall very pleased
did I tell you how small the pilot is?
he is not 1/72
compare him to a Swordfish crewman
better yet I dropped him into a Dauntless
looked like Gary Coleman riding in a school bus
thats almost as small as Corgi's F-86 pilot
maybe they're related
nice model rate it 71/2 out of 10

Actually it was Dr. Evil's twin "Mini Me". He was trying to take over the world even back then I guess.

Re: Russian P-39 critique

I just received the first two HM P-39s and, frankly, I'm very pleased. Yes, the pilots seem a bit small---especially when compared to those 350 pound "fatsos" that some of the other diecast manufacturers provide---but let's not overdo our criticism. HM's pilot figures are acceptable, once they are seated in the plane's cockpits. So maybe HM can make the next batch about 10-15% larger, but this is no big deal.

While I'm not pleased with those rather large holes used to install the canopies, this too, seems like a minor issue, except for those who wish to display their models in the wheels- down mode with the canopies open. Also, the panel lines don't seem as over inked as the early pictures indicated and, all in all, I think HM did a decent job on its P-39s. I'll probably fiddle around with them, making small improvements here and there---including an attempt to tone down the panel lines on the Makin Island version and adding some weathering effects--but consider me a happy camper so far on these birds.

I agree, Epapazian. I gave Devastating Devil 7/10 here.

Tiny or not I am extatic that they included a Pilot I did not know they did! That is great!
I do hate displaying my flying planes with ghosts in them

Re: Russian P-39 critique

Let me join the chorus of approval. I also received this recently and am very pleased. Not perfect but close enough, especially for twenty something clams. I have wanted to post a few pictures but just have not had the time.

Re: Russian P-39 critique

What's with HM and pilots anyway? Their 1/48 Spit XIV pilot was seriously undersized as well...

Not such a big deal, maybe, but would it cost that much more to get this right?

Anyway, it won't prevent me from getting the Pokryshkin P-39 (but how I wish it were in 1/48!).

Re: Russian P-39 critique

Looks like the color of the spinner is wrong, too, no? And the kill markings? Still a nice looking model and a great choice for a first livery.

Re: Russian P-39 critique

I have only seen the Easy Model P-39 in the box and it just seemed too plastic-looking to me. I waited for the HM and am glad I did so. I prefer the relative heft. The EM has more delicate features, because it is plastic and the HM panel lines are out of scale like most 1/72 die-cast, but I still think the overall presentation is more satisfactory.

I can't say for sure myself, Pappy. I suppose it depends on whether the website you referenced is accurate.
