Re: Russian P-39 critique

Looks like the color of the spinner is wrong, too, no? And the kill markings? Still a nice looking model and a great choice for a first livery.

Pokryshkin didn't just fly one P-39 with the same livery for the entire war (even towards the end when he had all those kills). Several liveries (even on the same aircraft) could in fact be correct, at different times, I think. I'm still looking for a picture of the one HM did, though (not easy).

This looks to be a picture of the Pokryshkin's P-39 as Hobby Master portrayed it.

Re: Russian P-39 critique

Thanks CC, great picture.

To me, this is THE P-39 livery to have. Who else had that many kills in a P-39? I just wish I could get it in 1/48.

Question to all owners of HM P-39s: the model does balance on its tricycle landing gear, right? I know my Easy Model one sure doesn't.

Hobby Master shifted the location of the main gear slightly aft so it would sit correctly on the three wheels. IXO raked the main gear struts aft about 30 degrees so it would also properly sit on the three wheels. Neither is ideal, but I think Hobby Masters solution is better.

Notice the picture is carefully framed to omit the tactical number? This is probably Major Grigorii A Rechkalov's P-39 being used as a backdrop for the propaganda photo.

Re: Russian P-39 critique

Here is a photo of the IXO and Hobby Master P-39s sitting on their landing gear. Don't have the EasyModel or I would have included it.

Re: Russian P-39 critique

What's with HM and pilots anyway? Their 1/48 Spit XIV pilot was seriously undersized as well...

Not such a big deal, maybe, but would it cost that much more to get this right?

Anyway, it won't prevent me from getting the Pokryshkin P-39 (but how I wish it were in 1/48!).

This has been mentioned to Hobby Master and I believe they are developing a growth hormone as we speak. I don't know how long it takes for it to start working.

Re: Russian P-39 critique

FVD. comparing your pic of a P-39 in post #12, vs the HM P-39 in post #17, one really can see, as has been previously remarked upon (by Hawk, if I remember correctly), that HM moved the landing gear back to make it sit correctly. Would I be safe in assuming that the landing gear is placed properly on the EasyModel?

Looks like it to me. But the price to pay is that it falls on its tail (I'm keeing mine on its stand for that reason).

I don't mind HM's solution and prefer it to IXO's, but really, the best solution would have been to weigh the aircraft's nose with a little extra metal. Anyway, minor point. But if someone ever makes this plane in 1/48 (dreaming?), I hope they follow my suggestion rather than mess around with the gear position..
