Re: Review of the HM MIG-21

I don't have a problem in general with the fiddily bits and maybe it is just me but the struts on the landing gear were an absolute pain in the ... A lot of other models with similar style gear have them molded as all one piece which reduces the frustration level for me. I also didn't find an obvious recess to attach the strut to the gear which made it a bit more time consuming. Eventually, I just said to heck with it and went gear up. However, the gear and strut is really my only quibble and I love the model.

One thing I found especially impressive was the weathering on the underside which gives the appearance exhaust from the missiles. Very subtle, very nice.

For a first offering in the jet line it is very well done and I look forward to the others.

The struts go from the hole in the wheel well to the door panel that is attached to the wheel. If you look closely you will see a small recess on the inside of the door front edge about half way up the door.

Re: Review of the HM MIG-21

Thanks for all of the comments on the review.

The struts on the wheels are very annoying and I gave up in the end. All of the images on the review are taken without the struts in place and that is how it is displayed on my desk, it still looks impressive.

This aircraft grows on you, I was impressed at first but now I am thinking of proposing to it. I have put in an order for the next lot of hobbymaster releases including the F104 and am really looking forward to it.

I hope that HM will release a set of Indian MiG-21 and its "victim", Pakistani F-104.

Regards,

Sergey

That would be very nice, and would make a really nice set. With the prices of these aircraft, it would not be unreasonable to expect people to pay for a double set.

Re: Review of the HM MIG-21

Very fine review! I cancelled this some weeks ago as a pre-order but after seeing this and others pics and opinions, I had to get one. $15 is well worth it I think.

Re: Review of the HM MIG-21

I got my Hobby Master MIG-21 from ebay for $14.99, even is not as cheap as the FOV stukas, hurricane, corsair form Target for $9.99 each.
I hope the quality of the HM is good enough to justified the $5.00 extra I pay for the plane for MIG.

I will know when I receive later this week.

I will be floored if you don't think it is -- it's worth the extra $10-15 MSRP price it carries compared to the FOV line, you got a good deal!

I finally got around to taking the MG-21 MF out of the box and I couldn't agree with you more. It's still in the box. The landing gear is a mess as far as I'm concerned: too many fiddy parts and lousy schematics. Either HM should simplify the gear, fewer parts, or put out photographs on how the landing gear is supposed to go together. A step-by-step approrach might go a long way in making this a more attractive addition to any hanger.
I've got a pre-order in for the F-104 "George", and I hope the gear is better thought out than it was on the MG-21 MF.

yeah, the gear is pretty bad -- you really have to glue the struts on, but you can put the rest together pretty easily and have it do its job (the struts aren't needed, in other words).

I not really good with those sensitive parts like the landing gear if it hard to put on. I hope I don't encounter the problem as stalag8611 is encountering, if i break the landing gear $14.99 is still not a good deal to me.

By the way you can still get the MIG for $14.99 on ebay at this price I see alot of listing for this price. So the genaral public will consider this a fair price.
