Re: Where's the Spit!!!!

Cardo was paraphrasing Winston Churchill to be cute (and I thought he was). He also added smilies to it, perhaps indicating that he was somewhat saying it in fun. I rather agree with him. We hype all kinds of diecast on this forum. It's a lot of fun to hype them, to collect them, and to talk about them, but lets not take it all too seriously. There are LOTS of more important things in life.

Nicely stated, Cappy.

Re: Where's the Spit!!!!

There's a HUGE gap between saying a model is somewhat overhyped (which is OK for this Spitfire, I don't think so myself but I won't argue it), and saying that it's the most overhyped, least deserving model ever. That was a non-sensical statement for which I need show no respect whatsoever, particularly now after seeing the obvious commercial success of the product.

Opinions are supposed to be the result of thought, not a subsitute for it.
And oh, if any one disagrees with that last statement, then all I have to say is it's my opinion and that should immunize be against any and all criticism So there...

FVD

I don't recall Cardo saying that... exactly. And, I doubt Cardo would claim this is the least deserving model, ever, but I will let him speak for himself. While I don't always agree with Cardo, I have come to respect his "diecast sense."

Thanks for the support Elmer and Captain Eddie - you interpreted my 'Churchillian' tongue in cheek comments in the way in which they were intended. I've stated from the outset that this particular model represents good value for money and that I'm pleased for HM that it is a commercial success.

As for the comments made by FVD, I find them not deserving of the respect that I've usually become accustomed to giving to his opinions. For the record, the statement that was made by FVD, and which is highlighted in blue above, is a gross distortion and misinterpretation/misrepresentation of all my comments on this issue and I find it particularly disappointing given that he is a fellow forum member whose views I've held in high esteem in the past.

Someone can't take a joke?
But admittedly, there was a lot of hype for this model. And just to be glaringly obvious to those who don't get it, the hype being everyone excited about pictures from pre-prods and all before actually getting one in their hands.

Re: Where's the Spit!!!!

Or maybe someone needs to go and read up the history and stories of the Battle of Britain. I'm still confused how any military air enthusiast could not see the amusement in a statement like that. Churchill's words really summed it up for what those boys in those lil spitfires and hurricanes had to face in 1940. And by saying Cardinal's words as belittling HM's Spitfire, then thats just like Churchill belittling RAF Fighter Command. Its like sayinh what Churchill really meant was "You lads really took your time about doing this. I don't care what odds you were up against, what took you so bloody long? are you going to start fighting now?"

Re: Where's the Spit!!!!

Is this what Sir Cardinal meant to say? "Never before have so many owed so much to so few" - Sir Winston Churchill

"Never in the field of diecast collecting has there been so much hype, by so many, about so little" - Sir Cardinal

How about this one? "Never before have so many diecast collectors owed so much to one company (HM)" - Sir 'slide

Right on, lanslide!

OK, Cardo, I'm willing to grant you that you may not have meant the faux-Churchill quote in its litteral interpretation. Nevertheless, the fact that you didn't even budge a micron from it when I asked the "still feel that way" question makes me think that it also wasn't meant as a simple joke. Otherwise, the answer to my question would have been something like "well, OK, maybe I underestimated the model's success by a smidgen." Instead your dismissive (and thoughtless) answer send quite a different message to those of us who really, really like this model (and HM in general). Your subsequent comments about herds and lemmings then confirms it beyond the shadow of a doubt.

If you want respect, respect others.

Cardinal clearly belittled the HM Spitfire (the only argument is how much he did - only a teeny bit says he, a whole lot say I - not the fact that he did), while Churchill, in his famous quote, clearly praised the gallantry of the RAF Fighter Command during the BoB. So what's your point? Maybe if you restate it in a more comprehensible manner, we can make sense of it...

Re: Where's the Spit!!!!

If i'm not mistaken, Cardo had high respect for this cast for quite some time. Otherwise, he wouldn't make the effort to para-phrase Churchill's famous speach that showed the utmost respect to RAF Fighter Command when the nation needed it most. So by asking whether he still felt that way, that would be asking whether he still felt the same respect to the cast as when he para-phrased Churchill in his own way.

To expect him to change his opinion would be expecting him to turn around and say that he no longer respected the cast. Which seems contrary to what everyone seems to be saying so far. So if you regard this cast as an absolutely fine model, by saying that Cardo's comments are negative to this cast is saying you didn't understand the context of which the original speach by Sir Winston Churchill made his speach at the end of the Battle of Britain. If anyone is interested, its the RAF that won the Battle of Britain despite facing odds of 2 to 1 and a life expect of as low as 4 days.

FVD, I'm sorry to say this, but I think you misinterpreted Cardo's comment and position by a very wide margin this time. Just looking at all the posts, Its clear that everyone is walking the same direction in this thread.
