HM MiG-21

Last edited by muesingman : 11-22-2007 at 03:46 PM.
I know, quite a little time has passed now since HM have released the German Mig-21 formerly belonging to JG 1... but there´s something about it I simply have to get rid of...

...I was so happy when this bird was announced - but I still can´t tell ya how disappointed I was when I had to see that WESTgerman markings had been applied.

This bird (as all East german MiG-21´s) spent most of its time within the LSK/LV. Sadly (though understandable from an economical point of view) after German reunification, for the Bundeswehr it was nothing more than a worthless piece of prey, lovelessly scrapped in 1991.

Althoug the camo scheme may exactly match the original, the so-called "shark mouth" looks to me such ridiculous, like a cartoon of a grinning... Idon´tknowwhat.

@hawk: do we have any chance for this bird to be re-released with the former GDR markings? In this case, I would buy it immediately - otherwise, it will NEVER be of interest to me.

By the way: Corgi actually does quite the same s**t, just the other way round: I would immediately buy a MiG-29 with West (in this case better: whole-) German JG 73 markings, wearing the light grey camo scheme. But what are Corgi just doing? Seems, they completely ignore the fact that it flew just about 17 months within the LSK/LV.

Shame on You both, HM and Corgi in these cases.

Re: HM MiG-21

It is for the very same reasons you enumerated that I never really warmed up to this particular MiG-21...and I've always wanted this particular livery to be part of my MiG-21collection for the longest time!

Re: HM MiG-21

Yes, I skipped that one also, same reason. I have 2 other HM MiG-21s and one (similar) Corgi, so I like the mould, but I like historical/operational significance if possible in my models. That one just didn't do it in that respect even if the cammo scheme is quite attractive.

Re: HM MiG-21

Even though I have purchased a few MiG-21 already (USSR, Iraqi), I am still holding out for a classic OPERATIONAL Warsaw Pac scheme. Take the fish off the Polish MiG-21 and I am in!

Agree with this completely though I've seen some really low prices on the Polish aircraft and have been tempted. So far I have resisted....

Smile Re: HM MiG-21

I have the first two and quite like them even with the reservations mentioned. I do agree though that ops schemes are preferable. Didn't like the bloated Russian one though.

Re: HM MiG-21

I went with the Soviet one despite the bloated look and lame version - I figured that this was the only classic, natural metal Soviet MiG-21 we would ever see.

Have to say, however, it looks pretty good in person - just check out the OMI banner on this site!

Re: HM MiG-21

I bought the Soviet one just because it was the Soviet one. However, with all the little gear and aerial parts, I didn't like the execution. Then I made the mistake of buying the Predator Nguyen Van Coc MiG-21; that one is really weird because the fin is molded of translucent silver plastic, through which light flows very freely! You would have thought Corgi could have spared a little extra paint and coated the thing.

Celtic, I'm glad you posted this...I've thought about picking up this scheme numerous times. Now I can save my money for something else not "see-through!"

Re: HM MiG-21

I am a big fan of HM, but I agree that HM has selected some funny colour schemes for their Mig-21, and they could have done better for no extra effort or cost.

For example, to issue an Egyptian Mig-21 was a great idea, but then they go and screw it up by giving it some meaningless late 70's or 80's paint schemes of no operational significance when they had available the possibility to have it in 1967 or 1973 colours. These would have been much more significant historically and hence far more attractive to us collectors.

On the other hand, their Iraki Mig-21 is a beautiful model.
