Bf-110G-2/R3

Has anyone found a picture of the actual Bf-110G-2/R3 of II/ZG 76 ('2N+EM') which Hobby Master is doing as HA 1801? The closest I've found is a photo of Helmut Haugk's 4./ZG 76 ('2N+EM') on page 94 of Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces 25 - Messerschmitt Bf 110 Zerstorer Aces of World War 2.

Looking at the picture of HA 1801 in the Hobby Master November Monthly Leaflet, I believe the rear canopy is wrong. It should be the same as shown on HA 1802, which the photo of the 4./ZG 76 ship shows. But there were a lot of individual modifications, so I'd like to find a photo of II/ZG 76 ('2N+EM') to verify if it was a unique configuration or not.

(Edit: I'm always confused on the Luftwaffe unit designations, so the Osprey photo may be of the actual aircraft if II gruppe includes staffeln 4, 5 and 6. So 4./ZG 76 would be a staffeln of II/ZG 76. Someone better at this help me out please.)

The Osprey photo is interesting as it shows the tips of the 210 mm rockets in their tubes and the plane is fitted with a ventral 30 mm cannon pack.

Re: Bf-110G-2/R3

Nice picture Hawkonevoodoo. Is there a reference or is it original art?

The G-2 had as standard a new sideways opening rear canopy for the gunner, not the old style upwards pivoting canopy as shown on HA 1801. It also had new MG 81 Z twin machine guns for rear defense. The old style rear canopy on HA 1801 picture looks wrong to me. HA 1801 should have the same greenhouse as HA 1802. The G's also had the rounded propeller spinner introduced on the F's. The picture looks like it has flat-nosed spinner.

Osprey Aircraft of the Aces 25 - Messerschmitt Bf 110 Zerstorer Aces of World War 2 has a 1/96 scale line drawing profile of both port and starboard sides of a G-2/R3 on page 99.

I like to match my individual diecast models to a reference when possible. A photo or profile art. The Osprey books cover most of my collection.

Hawk,
Just curious, will model come with under wing Wfr. Gr. 21 launchers as shown in the illustration?

Here are some pics of Bf-110G-2s, but no good shots of the rear canopy..

Re: Bf-110G-2/R3

One thing to watchout for Hawkone is that pic you have is of a nightfighter.. See the dual Shrage-musik cannon protruding from the top of rear canopy?? The canopy configuration is accurate though and one other noticeable difference in the different versions is the shape of the rear vertical stabilizers that went thru numerous variations with the different models..

Thanks for the advice. The only thing I was pointing out was the canopy because it gave a nice full view of the rear cockpit. Like you say, there are a few subtle differences for each variant. I suppose when you stick a bunch of metal rods on the front it definitely will change the flight characteristics.

Hawk, please correct me if I'm wrong... the more I study the photo of HA1801 you provided, the more I'm convinced that the rear canopy hatch is displayed in the open position and not a "modification", right?

Yes it is open this is what we are discussing. The fact that it shouldn't be open, it should look like HA1802, a green house type canopy.
