to wash or not to wash and pilots

April 26, 2007

I just learned that the June releases (arriving in North America in July) for Hobby Master 1/72 scale planes will come WITHOUT a weathering wash. This is on a trial basis only, they want to see how well they are received and could become the norm. The wash will remain on their 1/48 planes at least for now.

Also a pair of pilot figures is nearing completion and will be available for all aircraft. I will find out when you can expect to see them with the models.

Re: to wash or not to wash and pilots

I think the wash looks good on the 1/48 stuff, but it is just too much on the smaller 1/72 A/C...
BTW, Do you know which planes are coming without the wash???

Re: to wash or not to wash and pilots

The 'weathering wash' on 72nd diecast never really bothered me much so it doesn't really
matter (at least for me) if HM eliminates this process one way or the other. In fact, I don't
find it overdone when you compare what FOV have done on their diecasts which I think is
just too terrible and gawd-aweful mess!

The pilot figures sounds good, and I hope we get some with a 'standing pose' as well.

Re: to wash or not to wash and pilots

Will other weathering effects like exhaust stains still be applied, or are these going to be completely bare?

This is the list of 1/72 planes for an ETD of June 20. Allow about 2 - 3 weeks to be in the stores.

Air Power Series (1/72)
HA1503 T-6G Texan Aeronautica Militare, Accademia Aeronautica, Napoli, 1955 'AA+56'
HA1404 A-4B "Falklands" C-207, Fuerza Aerea Argentina, May 1982
HA1204 TBF-1C "Avenger" NZ2518 "Plonky", 30 Squadron, RNZAF, Piva, Bougainville, 1944
HA1008 F-104G German Air Force, Jabog 31
HA1601 Mirage 2000C 5-NJ/49, EC 1/5, Saudi Arabia, 1991 "Joan of Arc/Stork"
HA1602 Mirage 2000C 5-OP/74, Desert Storm "Daguet Operation", 1991

If this changes I will post it.

Re: to wash or not to wash and pilots

I would prefer a light wash. Compare the Corgi Predator Dauntless with the HM versions. IMO the wash looks better.

I'm assuming the only thing that will be left off will be the panel lines but I will confirm this. If it isn't just the lines I will let you know by this time tomorrow.

Definitely! I was under the impression they were going to try using a lighter wash with light-tone paint schemes and a darker one for the darker schemes -- did that get abandoned in favor of this "test"... so it would seem. I would have liked to see them try the first strategy, wel... first

(The pilot figs are great news!)

Todd, I am just the opposite.. I think the Predator version looks much better than the HM just because of the wash..

Re: to wash or not to wash and pilots

Let me poll the crystal ball.... hmmm... with the next wave of HM releases, 50% of collectors will like the new factory-fresh look, and 50% will long for the light wash days...
