Cool Scale 1:72 v. 1:48

A bit of truth in advertising: I really like the detail of 1:48 scale and really, really like 1:32. Two of the latter, the Barkhorn Bf-109 and the Lane Spitfire are on prominent display in my living room. Unfortunately, not one of the twenty-three 1:48s I own makes the cut; they’re all in their boxes in the basement.
fficeffice" />>>
All flat surfaces, mantels, tops of bookcases, end tables, etc display my 1:72s. With all the discussion about 1:48s I got out the steel tape and did some measuring to determine how many 1:72s I could comfortably display on a given area v. how many 1:48s. No surprise here, of course: roughly two 72nd for each 48th, regardless of how you set up the display, i.e., wheels-up v. flying. >>
>>
So, we’re sort of between the dog and the fire hydrant. Better detail as opposed to less surface on which to display. I opted for display space: Be careful of what you wish (opt) for. >>

Re: Scale 1:72 v. 1:48

While I have about 40 1:48 planes I prefer 1:72, not only because of the shelf space issue but also consistency. If one is going to collect a wide range of planes, including P-51s, B-26s and B-17s 1:72 offers a combination of proportionate compatibility that other scales can't match. Sure, 1:48 is great for an F2A and even more so for a tiny plane like the ME-163 or most WWI fighters, but a B-25 in the same scale takes up too much space while, for me at least, a JU-52 or B-24 is hopeless. Another reason I favor 1:72 is the wide selection of planes it offers. Few manufacturers will risk putting out a diecast Betty, SM-79 or DO-17Z, but these are reasonable possibilities in 1:72.

Re: Scale 1:72 v. 1:48

I seem to like the 1:48 fighters a little better in that scale...
But i'll stay in the 1:72 scale for the Big bombers because they would be too big to fit anywhere in a 1:48 scale.
I do have the B-25 Doollittle Raiders and Flak Bait B-26 in 1:48 and they are as big as i want to go with the Med Bombers..I'll make room for a P-61 Blackwidow in 1:48..

1/72 beats 1/48 in most areas.

I agree with STARMAN for single engine planes 1/48 scale the best & 172 for bombers

Post Re: Scale 1:72 v. 1:48

Living in a tiny modern house 1:72 is the best scale space wise but I can not resist the Corgi 1:32 scale planes when I can find one I want, so far I have 2 Spits ( Grumpy & Bader) 1 Mossie (Benson)
2 Hurries (Bader & Lewis) & 2 Bf109s (Barkhorn & Hackl) at present I am scouting for the Moncton Express Mossie.
Then there is the promise of more goodies in 1:48 scale like those beautiful Spits from HM & the prospect of more 1:32 scale models from them too ...the only thing consistent about my collection will be the inconsistancy of scales

Re: Scale 1:72 v. 1:48

I only collect 1:48. You do have to have large cases for the bombers, C-47 and Ju-52. My collection is very small compared to most of you guys. This is kind of an old picture with part of my collection.

Aeroeng, those two little ones will keep your diecast spending low.
they will keep you poor for the next 20 years or so. Mine certainly did.
BTW the cases you have are as perfect as you could get for displaying models, super job.

God Bless America.

Thanks Jim. My father-in-law made the cases for me.

Re: Scale 1:72 v. 1:48

I want to have multiple examples of all WWII fighters and bombers in my collection and I have limited display area in our small house so I now buy only 1/72 scale. My first two models were in 1/48 and I quickly saw that they were too big and too expensive for my ambitious collection goals. The 1/72 scale models have wonderful detail and are much less expensive than their 1/48 or 1/32 counterparts. I like having everything in the same scale so I can vary my displays and set up dioramas. I would have purchased a Buffalo if Hobby Master had released it in 1/72 and even though I'd love to have a Spitfire Mk XIV in my collection, I won't order it in 1/48 either. I'll wait until some company hopefully comes out with them in 1/72.

Hobby Master has been offering us excellent, high quality models and I'm excited about their future releases. However I'm concerned about them diluting their product line by offering too many scales. I wish they'd stick to 1/72 and offer us a wide range of outstanding fighters and bombers. There are many aircraft that have not been produced in 1/72nd like the P-61 Black Widow, A-26 Invader, A-20 Havoc, F7F Tigercat, F8F Bearcat, SB2C Helldiver, a Japanese Betty bomber or Nick fighter, etc, etc and I'd love to see them be released with Hobby Master's attention to quality and detail!

Dennis
