Re: Mig -21 The future

All I can say is please focus on OPERATIONAL SCHEMES and avoid the glitzy, one-off, airshow planes. Just give us some down and dirty, workhorse MiG-21's from the Soviet Union, Warsaw Pac, Middle East, SEA, and maybe a few other 3rd world nations. I'll buy a lot of them, I promise!

Couldn't agree more! Glitzy, one-off, airshow planes are non sellers.

Kiwi Dave,

I don't think that's true in general. They may be non-sellers to you, but other collectors actually like them. Matter of personal preferrence. I, like you, would rather see operational liveries, but I'm not beyond buying one-off schemes if it's special enough and well executed. My collection is probably about 90% "operational" (I include liveries of specific pilots/aces, etc.. in that category) and 10% "specials," but I can see why someone would skew their percentages more towards the latter.

Some of the special "airshow" liveries produced by certain companies have sold very well. I do agree that the first release of a subject should not be an airshow scheme, though.

I think Hobby Master has been doing a pretty good job with diversity, like KD said, some people like show planes but the majority like operational themes. I feel Hobby Master has a good blend of both but they have to get their timing down for show plane releases and I'm working on that so they are released later in the schedule.

Re: Mig -21 The future

I don't mind show planes, but would prefer operational schemes were done first. I don't only want British and US schemes in my collection, but most other nations aircraft that we get are of show planes such as:
Greek F-104
Belgian F-16
Dutch F-16
German AF Tornado
Belgian Hunter
Aussie Sea King
Venezuelan F-16s
Dutch Meteor
etc

We then get told by the manufacturers that foreign aircraft shemes are not popular and don't sell, so they are reluctant to do anymore. If these aircraft were produced in operational schemes I'm sure they would sell much better.

Re: Mig -21 The future

Just goes to show it's hard to please everyone.

In the case of the HM MiG-21, I waited until the Russian Air Force version came out to buy one, because I didn't want a one-off scheme (Big Fish), or the Luftwaffe version either (it was only in service with them for a very short time and in very low numbers) even though they both looked good. I'm still pondering the Iraqi one.

But the Russian one was so obvious that I really wonder why it wasn't made first.

Re: Mig -21 The future

How about the Iraqi defector? The same plane could effectively be produced in three schemes
  • Iraqi
  • US
  • Israeli

A MiG-21 operated by the Israel Air Force?
Repoted to have defected (ex Iraqi AF) this MiG spent some time in the U.S.A. for evaluation before it returned to Israel. The serial '007' has been allocated by someone with a sense of humuor. It has recently been repainted keeping the James Bond serial number.
