Re: HM Dauntless/Hist. Channel "Dogfights"

Man, that's hilarious... I was thinking after the segment (awesome!) that someone should do his SBD and Wildcat... and I already had the SBD

History Channel should start a commissions deal with someone though... with an 800 number order line after each segment, it would be like taking candy from babies

Re: HM Dauntless/Hist. Channel "Dogfights"

Well i got to play my DVR tonight to watch the Dogfights program you were talking about and i thought it was a good show.
Good story on the Dauntless,B-17 and the F-104.
But that Dauntless story was something else the way he fought off the zero's like that.
Great stuff.

JP, I think you meant the F-105 not F-104. Yeah, the episode was a blast!

Re: HM Dauntless/Hist. Channel "Dogfights"

As I'm watching "Dogfights" tonight (1/12) on the Hist. Channel - the first segment is on S. Vejtasa flying a Dauntless; dogfighting 3 Zeros- solo; AND beating ALL 3. (He then transfered to flying Wildcats.)

At the commercial, I pull out a couple Osprey books, and....

...realized that HM's USS Yorktown/Coral Sea Dauntless is in the exact markings of this - Vejtasa's - plane.

I might be the only guy on the forum who didn't know this - but if there are others - what a story/history/pilot on this HM Dauntless model.

I loved this model when I didn't realize the history of this particular plane - Now it carries even MORE historical/emotional "value" with me.
(It you missed "Dogfights" this week - look for the repeat. This first segment alone is well worth it.)

Wow! What a edisode! A Dantless against 3 Zeros and getting them all????...smokin"

Re: HM Dauntless/Hist. Channel "Dogfights"

I believe that it is this one: HM USMC VMSB-241, Battle of Midway, June 1942

So this is Swede's correct plane but HC got it wrong? That's it?!

Post #3 shows Swede's SBD from the Battle of Coral Sea.

Re: HM Dauntless/Hist. Channel "Dogfights"

More like this one.

Too bad the "Dogfights" staff didn't do their research on a Coral Sea SBD. Tri-color camo and red border stars and bars insignia....I think not.

I concur. I love "Dogfights", but you would think that the CGI folks would pay more consistent attention to detail on markings than they do.

And yes, Parsig, it would appear that the HobbyMaster USS Yorktown Dauntless with the red circles in the middle of the starts is actually Vejtasa's aircraft, and History Channel got it wrong.
