Re: Hobby Master's 1/48th Scale Brewster Buffalo

Many thanks for posting that site. I really enjoyed reading it . You just dont mess with those Flying Tiger boys. The arguments about the P40s performance remind me of the comments made by the late great Ray Hanna, He called the P40 one of the most underated fighters ever. He said he would take on anyone in his P40 at lower altitudes and win every time. I just love P40s I think they are a great aeroplane and I have a nice collection of models of the little beauties. I await a delivery from the Mule of one of the Carousel models in 1/48 scale. Oh yes and the Dora Cardo talked me into. I am watching with interest the opinions of Hanger members about the Buff, at the moment I am on the fence about this one.
Hey Jim!

Funny you should mention this. I am currently reading "First Team" by John Lundstrom (excellent read, btw!). I googled his name, and found an archive of an old usenet argument between Mr. Lundstrom and Erik Shilling, a former Flying Tiger.

After nosing around a little, I found an account of a dogfight by Mr. Shilling between himself in a P-40 and an RAF Buffalo in the Far East. Apparently, the Navy/Marine pilots in the Flying Tigers were badmouthing Chennault for his choice of the P-40 over the Buffalo. Chennault took a chance, and challenged the RAF with their Buffaloes to a mock dogfight. Mr. Shilling flew the P-40 in this engagement against an RAF pilot who was a Battle of Britain ace, and won handily. I can't remember the address, but I think if you google "Erik Shilling P-40", you will probably find it.

God Bless America.

Re: Hobby Master's 1/48th Scale Brewster Buffalo

I'll probably buy the Buffalo, but it will be my only 1:48 model. I wish they'd do one in 1:72 as well, because with me, space is a big issue. Real estate is very pricey in DC, as elsewhere!

Celtic, this model is too good to pass up. Ashville is listing it for $31.95. I couldn't locate the my book with the actual dimensions. So here is the approximate size of the 1:48 scale. W/S 8" x 6" L. Not too much room don't you think.

sitting on its belly with wheels up 8.9in L x 6in W x 1.9in H to the tip of a prop blade pointing straight up. Wheels down with one of the prop blades pointing straight up it is 2.95in H to the tip of the blade. These measurements are approximate.
