Re: Would you buy a SR-71 in 1/72nd

If i did my math right the size in 1:72nd scale would be.
Wingspan: 9 1/4 inches
Length: 18 inches
Thats not too bad of a size.

Re: Would you buy a SR-71 in 1/72nd

Hey there folks,
Okay, if everyone is REALLY serious about Hobby Master producing this mould (Sometime in 2008-2009 I presume as Hawkonevoodoo has said their production lineup is filled for a while.) then we need to come up with six different variants to justify the startup costs.

While I'd love to see this plane produced, the only other variant I can think of is the A-12. Any others out there that folks can suggest?

That would be the CIA's version - and yes I would gladly get that one too! I would also want the one with the 'Drone' on top.

Re: Would you buy a SR-71 in 1/72nd

I'd love one. While it'd be long, the wingspan is less than the F-14/F-15.

Physical variants would be hard to do, any A-12 or M-21 would require the entire forward fuselage to be changed, as well as the tailboom. An SR-71B could be possible, but there were only 2 built, and 1 crashed early on. (And was used to make the Frankenstein SR-71C) A B-model does open up options for NASA tail markings though. The mold need only be designed like any F-15/16/18 mold---two different spine inserts, to accomodate two different canopies. Honestly though, 99% of people couldn't tell if an SR-71 was painted up as an A-12. They even do it at museums in real life! Many planes at museums that are flat-out labled "SR-71 Blackbird" are actually A-12's painted black. There are few true, real SR-71's on display. But "A-12" wouldn't bring in visitors.

Personally, I want the low-vis all-red-markings schemes, from both the late 80's and the "brought back into service" era. Every SR-71 model ever has the white, but the all-red looks so cool on that black frame. (I'm still disappointed the SR-71 that was at Offutt AFB was repainted with the white markings like every other museum Blackbird--AFAIK it was the only one still wearing red)

There are however, plenty of paint variations using a single SR-71A mold:

"Standard" white markings.
Standard white with the Skunkworks logo on the tail.
Standard white with the Habu (snake) on the tail.
Standard white with the Playboy bunny on the tail.
Low-vis all-red minimal markings.
"Brought back into service" all-red extensive markings.
NASA markings.

David,
Hey there.

Thanks for joining the thread. I have to admit that your posts usually scare me. Not in a bad way, but in a "DO NOT get into a bar bet with this guy. He REALLY know's his stuff." kind of way.

Your list of options is far more that I would have imagined available. Plus, you did bring up the fine point that many folks in the general public will know what a SR-71 is. Maybe we could talk Hobby Master into making one of these after all? They do seem to be tuned into what the "general public" wants as well as the collector. (Hence the Flight 19 Avenger listed on another post.)

With some initiative and research - you can empower yourself with technical knowledge and make yourself look dangerous and impress the hell out of us as well. Penny for your thoughts....

Re: Would you buy a SR-71 in 1/72nd

It's been done as a kit in 1/72 (and even 1/48, IIRC). I'd like to see one, and I would buy one. Certainly some of the 1/48 A/C are as big or bigger (and cost as much or more) than a Blackbird would be in 1/72.

Re: Would you buy a SR-71 in 1/72nd

I have the Franklin Mint SR71. It was the first plane I ever purchased. It's one of my favourites, but somewhat out of place in my collection. It's 13" long tail to needle and 6.5" at its widest span. I would have to look it up in one of my books to calculate the scale, but not today. It would be a terrific model in anyones collection. I hope someone will do it. Owing to current ownership. I'll pass on this one. Swoop. n' out
