Re: Hobby Master has just told me!!!!!

They can even do a replica Zero.. for real authentic Tora Tora Tora scenes..

I thought that was a Dauntless they used. I took a pic at EAA a few years ago...I swear it was a Dauntless.

Well, I think a Texan is great! I was just thinking about getting an EI one n 1/48 and now I think I'll wait. With this and the GJ P-51b I guess I won't be getting the EI ones now. Thanks I think...

Pics of the Zero and Texans I like below.

Maybe it is a Texan??

Re: Hobby Master has just told me!!!!!

Texan parsig. Look at the fairing in front of the windscreen. When they fly by (just watched Tora, Tora, Tora again) the wings are square just like the Texan. Besides, are there any surviving Dauntless's out there?

Your right HotTrap. Texans. I remember when the movie was made there was all kinds of articles about making the movie.

I would hate to see a Dauntless converted like that. Texans are pretty plentiful.

Re: Hobby Master has just told me!!!!!

Nice pics Spinnaker. Those taken at Wanaka? I have friends who moved to NZ recently and I encouraged them to take the kids to see the aircraft.

The family are by no means interested in aircraft but they were raving about their visit to an airshow to the extent that they even called me in SA to tell me.

I'm looking forward to one day visiting NZ again but this time specifically to visit Wanaka.

I pulled those pics off airliners.net, but yes, most of them would have been taken at the Warbirds Over Wanaka show.

It's worth the trip if ever you make it out to New Zealand - and if you ever come, make sure you look me up for a beer!

Re: Hobby Master has just told me!!!!!

"When the movie "Tora, Tora, Tora" was filmed in 1969 there were no airworthy Japanese aircraft available for the combat scenes and computer generated imagery had yet to make its appearance. The problem was solved, in what was then, typical Hollywood fashion. The Studio built its own Japanese fleet and planes. BT-13, BT-15 and SNJ/AT-6 aircraft were converted into Kate torpedo planes, Val dive bombers and Zero fighters. After the filming was completed the planes were eventually put up for sale and found their way into both museum and private hands."

The T-6 is an important aircraft. It served with many nations, in all of the U.S. branches, and flew in many roles. They even used T-6's as fighters in some countries. The U.S. used them as FAC aircraft well into Vietnam. The Stearman would be great to see. I would love to see a USAAF version as well as a Navy Yellow Peril.

This Wirraway (Harvard/AT6 conversion for the RAAF) was used in the training, Army Co-Op and general utility roles by the RAAF. A Wirraway even shot down a Zero:

Pilot Officer (PO) J. S. Archer, had leapt from the aircraft and run across to the Control Tent where he had found the Control Officer talking to NX34655 Captain Alan Oliver Watson, Dental Officer with the 2/4th Field Ambulance. Puffing hard, PO Archer exclaimed excitedly, 'Sir, sir, I think I've shot down a Zero!' To this the Control Officer replied, 'Don't be silly, Archer, Wirraways can't shoot down Zeros.' 'Well, sir,' continued Archer, 'I went in to look at the wreck off Gona and I saw this thing in front of me and it had red spots on it, so I gave it a burst and it appeared to fall into the sea.' Within a few minutes, a dozen telephone calls from observers all around the Gona area confirmed Archer's story. While on a tactical reconnaissance mission over the Japanese ship wrecked in the sea off Gona, Archer and his observer, Sergeant J.F. Coulston, had sighted the Zero 1,000 feet below. After diving on the Japanese aircraft, they had fired a long burst into it with the Wirraway's two Vickers .303 machine guns, causing the Zero to crash into the sea. Archer was later awarded the DFC for his exploit.

The crew received a carton of beer as well I believe!!

Cheers CKS1
