Re: French Mirage 2000 Missiles

I beleive they are Durandals. They are a bomb with a rocket motor for increased penetration against runways.

Re: French Mirage 2000 Missiles

That is correct. The Durandal has a parachute to slow it down first, and increase the penetration angle to as close to vertical as possible (from a low altitude release), then the parachute is ejected at the same time that a rocket fires to give greater penetration depth. The delay fuze explodes the weapon a few feet below the surface, making for a larger crater.

However, I might add that a Mirage 2000C has never seen one of those in real life (at any time), and in fact the French Air Force no longer carries Durandal in the inventory at all (and hasn't for quite a while). When I get my HM Mirage 2000C, I'm leaving those off for sure.

Another trivia tidbit: we carried the Durandal in the US inventory for a few years in the 80s, to use on the F-111. I never flew with any on my wing myself, though.
