Question Metal content of 1/56 Tiger Is

Last edited by Cardinal : 05-08-2007 at 09:14 PM.
I'm considering getting one of the highly recommended HM 1/56 scale Tiger Is and was wondering what the metal content was i.e. are both turret and hull metal? (I know the early 1/48 King Tigers have plastic turrets which are to be metal in later models.)

Re: Metal content of 1/56 Tiger Is

I've had a look at Hawk1's site and found some of the relevant info.

I would however like to hear some more views about the HM Ground Power range from those of you who have them ... anyone?

Thumbs up Re: Metal content of 1/56 Tiger Is

I don't want to bust anyone's bubble, but I have them listed on my website, and have the M1A1, and the King Tiger 1/48, and I have yet to find any metal on either of them. They are not like the CORGI, when you pick up a CORGI tank, you know it has metal.

Re: Metal content of 1/56 Tiger Is

Due to my aircraft space needs 190+ I had to get rid of most of my 1/50 Corgis and sublime Minichamps models. I kept however one major example of each tank ie, Panther , Sherman, Churchill etc, On seing the Hobbymaster 1/48 King tiger I grabbed it to to expand my small range. Disappointing, very disappointing IMHO. It felt totally plastic when I lifted my Corgi Tiger and compared them.

I just took HG0101 the first 1/56 Tiger I and HG0103 1/56 Tiger I apart and the the hulls are all metal, the deck is plastic or else you wouldn't get all the detail required with vents and hatches and so on. The turrets are metal and the guns are plastic.

As was announced a few months ago starting with 1/48 HG0109 King Tiger there would be more metal content. The hull is all metal, the deck is plastic for the same reason and the turret and the first half of the gun are metal.

I took a knife and scrapped the paint off the inside of the models and once the paint was gone I could see metal.

Hawkonevoodo,

I did not take mine apart, nor did I scrape the paint off, so I missed the metal, I am glad to know that HM is going to metal. The tanks look great, but were lacking in the metal dept. When comparing them to the CORGI there was little or no weight comparisom. The turret in the King Tiger sounded as if it too were plastic, as I was going on the sound and the weight only. Thanks for letting us all know.

It would have been nice if you had checked a little more before posting something that could do a lot of damage to a company reputation.

Sorry! As I said I was going by sound and weight, I didn't take it apart.

So Hawk, I guess we can assume the JS-2s will have quite a bit of metal as well, right? I have not bought an HM tank yet, but I'm very interested in their 1/48 range. The JS-2 will be my first HM armor buy no matter what, but I'm just curious. I can't wait to add it to my collection, BTW... I hope HM produces more of these tanks that have yet to see the light in diecast. Shermans, Tigers and Panthers are great, but they've been done over and over again.

I'd love to see 1/48 Matildas, JS-3s, KV-1s and 2s (have been done in other scale, I know), M-24s, Arietes, and so on.

This is from my review of HG1101 IS-2:
"The hull is made entirely of metal with no slug fastened inside to give you the false impression that the hull is made from heavy die-cast metal.(first sentence paragraph 2)
The turret as well as the main gun is made of metal. (first sentence paragraph 4)"
