Old Dinky Chieftain

I picked up one of these in a local junk/antique shop for £12.00. It was in perfect condition. The only things which are naff are the tracks which are silver plastic. Still, the track assembly turns.

The fun thing about this tank is the non-PC gun. It is spring loaded and fires shells, matchsticks, anything you can load!

The black ' turret hatch' elevates the gun.

Considered too dangerous for children today, the tank is not a toy!

Dating from the early 70s to the late 70s, there are thousands of these child-killers lying around the UK lurking in old boxes in storerooms and attics.

You can find them on ebay for about £10-£20, depending on condition!

There are thousands and thousands of old Dinky, Corgi, Crescent, etc Tanks and Military vehicles on the second-hand market in the U.K.

Some are so common and numerous that you can pick up perfectly good Saladins for £5.00 which are 40-50 years old!

Has anyone else picked up old diecasts on their travels? Post here if you have a story to tell!

MoMo

MoMo,
Hey there. Awesome pick up. I love those old toys that actually did something. I remember having a Cordi or Dinky Star Trek Enterprise back when I was a kid that actually fired discs from the hull. Hours of fun.

Re: Old Dinky Chieftain

Ive had this 1950's Dinky Centurion & Antar carrier for a couple of years, looks to be approx 1/50. From its condition I would say it has seen some action on some lucky child's battlefield, but still it is complete with original rubber tracks.

That series of early military Dinky are 1/60 scale.

Re: Old Dinky Chieftain

That series of early military Dinky are 1/60 scale.

I had to check this (as you do). The Dinky is 60mm wide, the real version is 3.39m wide which equates to 1/56.5. You were closer than I was Aircrafty

I thought it was 1/50 by comparing it to the Corgi Tiger I Ive got (same length, Centurion a few mm narrower) obviously the Centurion was a larger tank all up.

Re: Old Dinky Chieftain

I had one of those when I was a kid. Unfortunately I never managed to successfully shoot my sister so I can't comment on it child killing qualities.

It is still at Grandma's house and the next generation loved it when visiting Grandma last summer. Have to say it looks like it's been through 2 world wars itself.

Mine came as part of a dinky CKD kit. It came as a pile of unpainted Die-cast components. Had great fun making it.

Momo - I seem to remember there should be a black plastic muzzle break on the front if the gun. I'm sure you can get a repro one to complete the vehicle.
