Question Choice in 1/50 - 1/48 armor...

is much more narrow than in 1/72 or 1/35 - 1/32...

Are these scales that less popular ? Do you collect them ?

What models (10 max pse ) would you like most to be added to Corgi's 1/50 and HM's 1/48 (1/56) ranges ?

For me it would be :

Centurion
Leopard 2
M18 Hellcat
M24 Chaffee
M26 Pershing
M41 Walker Bulldog
B1bis
Hotchkiss H39

Re: Choice in 1/50 - 1/48 armor...

Considering Corgi's penchant for things British, I would start my list with the Matilda II, Centurion and maybe a Crusader. Then I would add the German Panzer Mark II and III along with a Jagdpanzer. As for the U.S., the M 18 "Hellcat" suits me too. Aside from these, I'd really like a Char B, Somua S-35 and a Japanese Type 97, but there's little chance of seeing these from Corgi. Admiral was supposedly doing a Type 97, in 1:72, and Hobby Master has plans for others on our mutual list, but also in 1:72.

Re: Choice in 1/50 - 1/48 armor...

I'm not sure it's true that the choice is much more narrow in 1/48 or 1/50, unless you count all Solidos/Verem and derivatives as "toys" rather than models, and you also exclude the Parade/Gasoline lines as non-diecast since they are made of resin and plastic (mostly, except those based on Solido/Verem). I have a lot of stuff in those scales that's not available in any other scale (though granted, many of these are modern French Army which may have limited interest to Anglo-Saxon collectors). But for example, who else but Solido makes an M-47 Patton or a Leopard 1? And there are many other examples. And my Gasoline B1 bis, while not strictly diecast (and not cheap), is just a magnificent model.

Nevertheless, I would like to see many more in that scale, number one being the M-1A1 or A2 and M2/M-3 Bradley. Then all the ones mentioned in the two previous posts, plus a KV-1. KV-2, Su-152, JS-3, and some Italian WW II tanks. In the modern era category: Challenger 2, Merkava III and IV (I know Wartanks have made one, I believe the Merkava II, but tough to find), T-72, T-55, T-62, T-80, and Leclerc (I have two the CEF-Replex ones, but while their overall shape is good, they are not up to standard on details). I'm sure I could think of more...

I agree with you about the Gaso.line and Solido/Verem models being great additions to AFV collections. While the Gaso.line series is relatively expensive, it offers a wide variety of models to pick from that are not available from diecast manufacturers in 1:48/1:50 scale. I also have a Char B, along with a Matilda II, KV-I, T-70 and others from this line. Even though I have to repaint some of them, I have no complaints. As for the Solidos, they tend to be less detailed and more toy-like, while the Verem models, which are based on the same chassis, are considerably more realistic. I just finished a redo of a Somua S-35 and am awaiting the delivery of a few add-on parts to complete what I feel will be another worthwhile detailing project. Also of note are Tamiya's line of fully assembled and detailed 1:48 and 1:32 scale models. These are based on kits but the builds are weighted down with enough metal to give a more substantial feel.

Re: Choice in 1/50 - 1/48 armor...

I think most guys started out collecting 1/48 scale aircraft and 1/50 scale tanks, but with more experience and a greater desire for accuracy and detail most have switched to 1/72 scale. The smaller 1/72 models also enable a more extensive collection without the need for rows of display cabinets. I'm not sure about prices in the US but the early limited edition Corgi tanks were way overpriced and plenty are still sitting on the shelves in hobby shops downunder. I did have an extensive Solido/Verem collection together with a few of the expensive Gas-O-Line models, but have sold off most of them.

A precision FVD : I have deliberately ignored expensive "artisanal" resin models (gaso-line, parade...), as well as Werem/Solido and Replex, wich are out of business...

That's what I thought.

I, for one, am not giving up on quarter-scale for armor. Just as for WW II planes (fighters anyways), I think 1/72 is too small and 1/48 (or 1/50) makes for much more impressive models. I have quite a few 1/72 airplanes anyway, but I don't see myself going to that scale for armor.

I'm keeping my eyes on HM (I already have one each of their JS-2s and King Tigers) and maybe Corgi will come out with more models in the future. Otherwise I'll go back to paying big bucks for Gaso Line products. I need to look into that Tamyia pre-built line as well. I'll take plastic in 1/48 over diecast in 1/72 (that's getting pretty rare anyways, I mean, true diecast armor in that scale).
