Pics: GMP Kittyhawk

This one's for you Jim!

GMP's new Kittyhawk... the color reproduction in the pics is pretty much dead-on. If anything, the red is a tad too saturated, but the camo is accurate. The base tan, does look too dark -- but perhaps this bird just hasn't sat in the sun long enough, and I'm sure the colors varied a bit from bird to bird in actuality, no? Interestingly, the pics of the model on GMP's site show the base being significantly lighter... perhaps some miscommunication along the way from pre-pro to final?

Regardless, I think it's a striking scheme and I likes it just fine... I might as well start hunting for good deals on the Aleutian scheme now just to complete the P-40 set... Oiye!

By all means tell us, JP -- you just don't dig the scheme, or is there something GMP did wrong that makes you want to barf? I'm curious... don't hold back man!

Re: Pics: GMP Kittyhawk

Beautiful photos Pappy many thanks for posting them.
You just cannot get better than that, the record of achievement by these birds in the MOT campaign is outstanding.
The serviceability record of P40s in the desert was nothing short of amazing compared to the Hurricanes Spitfires and 109s.
Well built and tough, easy to work on, ideal for the desert theatre.

Topside the colours are shade on the dark side however the underside looks spot on to me. Pappy you make a good point about them weathering in the desert. Even on black and white photos its possible to see the differences in shades due to age and time out in the open.
Anyway after a couple of sand storms the paintwork would be wrecked.
The Sharkmouth I dont know, there were so many variants that its impossible to say how accurate this is.

It would be silly to find faults with this model its as good as anything on the market today. My only very smalll criticism is that the aerial is wrong for a British Kittyhawk. The 3 wire system was taken off and the British single wire was installed but thats minor thing.
I have just bought Exterminator and now this is on my must have list.
Funny but the list never seems to get any shorter.

At ebay prices these are bargains even for a poor Brit like me. BTW I am off to Duxford for the weekend,(American airshow) I hope that Pearl P40 will be flying.

God Bless America.

All i will say is that nose art does not look right....Rest of the KittyHawk is good .....But not that nose art....
I had picture of the real bird somewhere and the nose art on that real bird was different.

I've been scouring the net looking for good evidence that it's wrong... come up empty so far. Hard to believe GMP would greenlight production with incorrect nose art, but sillier things have happened... I'm no kittyhawk expert. (Though I like the different look of the nose art, even if it is a bit...loud... :-))

Starman you just have to get this one, its a major part of Americas contribution to the war effort.
Everything that followed after this bird was due in part to the work done by Curtis. Many lessons were learnt that got passed on to other design teams in America thus enabling the P47 /P51 to become the great planes they surely were.

You know it makes sense. You know you need one. If you dont get one then.....well its like having tea without a bun!

BTW Starman ,the nose art does seem to be wrong in that the yellow of the lower part of the mouth should either be red, black or rarely the colour of the lighter camo . However it worth mentioning that even in a squadron the Sharks mouth would be different on each plane. there didnt seem to be a set pattern.
112 squadron didnt have two Sharksmouths the same.there are 10 variants that I know of.

If we really want to get into rivet counting shouldnt the center gun be a little higher than the other two?
Maybe they changed it after the MK2

God Bless America.
