Cool Re: Fairwell GMP

OK, so what exactly is a fair price to be paying for GMPs? I have Texas Longhorn and Dutchess Arlene. I wouldn't mind another one of each. Maybe Neville Duke's Kittyhawk and another P51. P51s are a tough choice though. I'd like a blue noser but they all look very good. I've even taken a fancy to Marie. You don't see many yellow tails in diecast.

What?! No comments on price? Bhah! Went ahead and bought P51 Marie and RAF P40.

Re: Fairwell GMP

I'm not heartbroken over this whole GMP thing at all. I'm still waiting for someone to come along and make a great larger-scale Mustang...GMPs may have been pretty and had a lot of detail, but there was still something about them that just wasn't quite right (much like tank nut).

Someday, someone build it.............and we will come. We will come for reasons we can't even fathom.
UPS will turn up our driveway, not knowing for sure why they're doing it.

Gorgeous, totally accurate Mustangs will arrive at our door
as innocent as children......longing for the past.

...........and we'll pass over the money
without even thinking about it.

Re: Fairwell GMP

Franklin Mint has marched by like an army of steam rollers, but the one constant through time has been the Mustang. I love that movie. I wish GMP would have made a Corsair

Hard to say what a fair price is with the current news -- I would expect prices to climb. For the last year you could expect to pay $60 for all BUT the first and most recent releases on ebay and gomotor... I've seen the RAF P40 on clearance recently for $100 and the Marie seems to be at $140 or so. Gomotor seems to have a few of 'em and I would bet you could get one for $75 or so there? Or rather could have, since you already pulled the trigger -- great-looking model so I'm sure you won't regret it if you paid more.

Re: Fairwell GMP

I'm also disappointed GMP didn't stay in long enough to make a Corsair. I believe the $50 ebay prices are a symptom of the reason that GMP choose to get out rather than the cause. There was very low market demand for their product, at the $150 retail level, and GMP's planes were expensive items for retail dealers to carry in inventory for any length of time. When there's little demand at the retail level, there's little demand at the wholesale level. When that happens, wholesalers dump product, at cost on ebay (or sell to local dealers "out the back door" dirt cheap), to clear out merchandise that isn't moving so they can generate the cash needed to buy newer products that are moving.

Re: Fairwell GMP

I got Duchess Arlene on e-bay for $76 just today, and shoot, what do you know, I then saw one for $69.95. Dang it...

But close enough, and a fair price. I also have the last two P-40s missing from my collection coming (Aleutian and RAF).

I too will miss the GMP planes (although I agree with Skunky's comments about the P-51s, I still think overall they are great models. I guess my standards aren't quite as high as his beatitude the Skunkmeister ). I must say, though, that I did not warm up to them until pretty late in the ball game, due to scale (would have preferred 1/32) and price. I never paid full price for one, and I still think, as the proud owner of a few of these models, that $150 is fairly high even given the level of quality.

Now my eyes are turned towards HM and their new 1/32 line. I hope it won't be the victim of non-affordability, but that remains to be seen. At least they got the scale right.

Re: Fairwell GMP

I'm still waiting for someone to come along and make a great larger-scale Mustang...GMPs may have been pretty and had a lot of detail, but there was still something about them that just wasn't quite right.

It was the hinges on the flaps and ailerons, the misfiting cowl panels, the incorrect length of gear door and rake of the gear, and lack of panel fastener/rivet detail for the scale. I'm with 'ya Skunky, while it is a pretty model (and I have one -- Petie), it isn't the representation I really want.

Someday, someone build it.............and we will come. We will come for reasons we can't even fathom.

That's it, Elmer!!!.....other than that they were spot-on-dead-accurate flawlessly awesome!

Re: Fairwell GMP

Cardo, if the only criteria for giving 'thumbs up' to GMP's Mustangs is based upon looking good rather than looking accurate, then I'm in total agreement. They look great. If real P-51Ds had huge, visible flap hinges, skinny landing gear etc. then they would have a true winner on their hands and I would be lamenting their departure from the aircraft sector of the diecast world along with everyone else....It seems GMP compensated for the Mustangs' anorexic landing gear by making their P-40s' "legs" too thick....

running for cover with my helmet now as I anticipate the incoming wrath!.....
