The F-15 is a great plane. I saw the Raptor at Oshkosh, and Oh my God! It was amazing. As for the GMP P-40, I too have the Scott P-40. It is perhaps my favorite diecast airplane.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

With all the attention they paid to the fabulous detail on this one, how come they couldn't get the tail wheel on right with the Scott P-40?..

I will second the sentiment on the GMP birds, P-40 tailwheel notwithstanding. I've got Old Crow (natch), Cripes a Mighty and Scott's P-40.

My only criticism is the automatic u/c retracting mechanism on the P-40; very cool but also fragile and finnicky. I think I would have preferred a more conventional system for long-term stability.

I still say that it is correct to what tthey saw on the aircraft. The aircraft was more than likely in a museum or hangar, and the tail wheel was turned around like that. It is not wrong, just it should be able to turn around(free castoring tail wheel).

That's kind of as I figured as well...

P-40 tail wheel...

I had forgoten about the tailwheel... When I opened mine I found the tailwheel assemby installed backwards! I removed it and reinstalled correctly. The wheel itself was rather poorly attached to the strut which I also beefed up. Oh well, still my favorite model! Though have any of you seen the CMC auto's? I just looked over the "Birdcage" Masarati @ my local shop, simply amazing! And despite the $200+ price I am being called to the dark side (another catagory of collecting) by that dang auto! It calls to me in my sleep claiming to be my father? Whats up with that? Go figure.

Question Re: P-40 tail wheel...

I removed it and reinstalled correctly.

Can you elaborate on how this is done? I'd love to give it a shot if it is not too difficult/involved (my skills are limited ).

Sure, this is really not to tough at all. To do it right you will need a rather small drill bit and a pair of modeling shears (plain old diagonal side cutters,"dikes" will do also), and some "super" type glue and a small bit of brass or other metal rod, heck a paper clip will do in a pinch!
Using the shears cut the tail wheel strut just below the lt. brown upper strut portion. Now having seperated the strut and lightly sanding or filing the "break" you will need to drill about 2-3mm into both halves at the point of your initial cut. Then simply cut a length of your brass rod and insert and glue the two strut halves back together w/ the brass rod as a core to add strength. Heck mine is probably stronger than the original strut and w/ a bit o touch up paint, you cant tell it has been repaired! Well except I just told all of you...
