Re: Detailing of GMP models

Just found out regarding Old Exterminator, the tailwheel is facing the correct way...the aircraft is backwards..
That'll probably be a much more complex fix than I originally imagined...

Re: Detailing of GMP models

Well, I performed the tail wheel operation on Old Exterminator today and I'm happy to report it was successful. I didn't go as far as JC Goodman, and stuck to super-glue only. It appears to be quite sufficient. I think my model now looks "right" (to me anyway).

Now that I have my first couple of GMPs, (that one and P-51D Cripes-A-Mighty, the first "blue-noser" in my collection, if you can believe that...), I can say I like them a lot, but as Skunky (and others) have pointed out, they have their share of faults. At the prices I got them for (e-bay), I can live with those detail problems. The P-40, once the tail wheel is corrected, looks pretty fantastic to me. The P-51 has more flaws, such as the skinny gear (particularly the tires) and the visible hinges on the moving surfaces. Too bad, because in some other aspects they do approach perfection IMHO. I did love the 352 FG history booklet (hardcover!) included with the P-51, very nice bonus indeed.

Overall, I highly recommend GMP models if you can get them at a discount. Not sure about paying full price, though, I guess that's up to the individual collector. Based on what I've seen so far, I'm now really curious to see what GMP might come out with next.

Re: Detailing of GMP models

I now also have the Texas Longhorn P-40, and with the tail wheel correctly oriented (no surgery needed). I must say it now probably is the finest diecast model in my collection (I do still love my Carousel Dora-13, though). $56 on e-bay (plus $13 shipping), can't beat that. So as far as value for money, no doubt: this is the best of the best (at that price).

The detailing on the GMP P40s is truly exceptional, especially the cockpit and engine compartment - truly stunning and life-like!

So Skunky, do ya know where Jim's been hiding lately? Haven't heard a peep from your eccentric friend for awhile. Hope he's alright.

I to have Texas Longhorn and rate it as the best in my diecast collection. I should soon be getting the Desert P40, so I think that it may soon drop to second place.

I am not sure what the silver bits are ment to be, when you remove the top wing panels on the P40. Anyone know ?

Also, on the P40, the rear cockpit glass looks like it is flush with the metal. Is this the same on the real thing, or is there a slight gap ? I can't see a reason for the rear glass unless there is a bit of a gap.
