Re: Detailing of GMP models

I wonder if drilling is really necessary, maybe just the superglue would be enough (?).

I'm thinking the CA should be enough to do the trick...

Re: Detailing of GMP models

OK, I got my GMP Old Exterminator P-40 in the mail today. It is indeed a superb model... EXCEPT for that tail wheel pointing the wrong way. Mustangdriver warned about that so I wasn't too surprised, but I must say that is a pretty serious flaw in a model that expensive (though I got mine way lower than normal MSRP on e-bay) and which otherwise is perfect. Now I know the wheel can be that way in real life under unusual circumstances, but to me it just looks really weird and I'm not too happy about it. I'm raking my brains trying to figure out a way to correct this. I fear there is no easy way...

I don't know, am I being to fussy with this "detail"? Jim, Mr. P-40, tell me, what do you think?

FVD

Hey just say it was parked up that way. Ground crew pushed it back onto the hardstanding. BTW Skunky has shares in the CA company so watch out.

Re: Detailing of GMP models

Thanks Skunky! I may try the same thing. I wonder if drilling is really necessary, maybe just the superglue would be enough (?).

We'll see... In any event I'm not inclined to leave it as is.

After examining my 'Texas Longhorn' P-40, I've determined that Mr. Woodman's technique to fix the tail-wheel problem is quite sound and I've decided to follow his instructions below as well.

J C Woodman: Sure, this is really not to tough at all. To do it right you will need a rather small drill bit and a pair of modeling shears (plain old diagonal side cutters,"dikes" will do also), and some "super" type glue and a small bit of brass or other metal rod, heck a paper clip will do in a pinch!
Using the shears cut the tail wheel strut just below the lt. brown upper strut portion. Now having seperated the strut and lightly sanding or filing the "break" you will need to drill about 2-3mm into both halves at the point of your initial cut. Then simply cut a length of your brass rod and insert and glue the two strut halves back together w/ the brass rod as a core to add strength. Heck mine is probably stronger than the original strut and w/ a bit o touch up paint, you cant tell it has been repaired! Well except I just told all of you...

Yes, that's the easy "solution" but I'm thinking that this coming weekend I'm taking some tools and superglue to this tail wheel. I just don't like it the way it is now.

I think you are right FVD it just wont look right , with a little patience I am sure it will not be too difficult.
I tend to shy away from doing repairs like that because my hand eye co-ordination is not so good any more (and with Lorraine chatting away in the background its difficult to concentrate).

I tend to agree with you on this FVD. I've resisted buying Old Exterminator because of the tail wheel fault (& the olive drab) in favour of Texas Longhorn, which I find more aesthetically pleasing .

Re: Detailing of GMP models

Hey Card what do you mean about the O.D. Green? It looks pretty spot on to me. As for the tail wheel the real aircraft was more than likely sitting that way when they saw it, so I can over look it. But what are all entitled to our own opinions. Like I always say, that is what makes this hobby cool.

The Olive Drab green is perfect MD . I've just never been a great fan of the plain OD schemes and much prefer contrasting camo. . I'm considering getting the Missouri Armada P51D though precisely because it is OD and would contrast well with the silver Duchess and Cripes - go figure (BTW does MA come with an aerial mast? I know it lacks the wire.)

Nope, no mast -- the only GMP 'stang that doesn't have one...
