Smile Re: Detailing of GMP models

Today I spent some time closely examining my GMP Cripes A' Mighty 3rd Mustang, which without a doubt is a beautiful piece of showroom die-cast .

However, I couldn't but fail to notice that although it has some unique detailing e.g. guns, it doesn't have nearly the same level of detail and realism as my 1/48 Patty Ann II P51B from Eagles International. To be honest, I think that the level of detailing on EI models is in a class of its own and will possibly be the main reason why I buy no more GMPs but instead put the Ca$h aside for the new EI releases and those from Carousel 1 (with the occasional HM and FM 1/48s thrown in for good measure) .

I'm definitely no rivet counter but am I alone in thinking that the hype surrounding GMP aircraft is more 'style over substance' ...

I dunno, I kind of think this is an "apples and oranges" question really -- two different scales, two different approaches... but I think the GMP's are better in some ways -- cockpit detail, engine detail, moving parts/removeable panels, etc. Heck, the GMP P-51 even has the light in the gear well. I do agree that the profile is slightly "off" but there are no better models IMHO to serve as the centerpiece of a collection.

I have 4 GMP P-51s and 2 EI P-51Bs and they're all very, very good. (I got three of the GMPs for less than an EI models costs, each,...) When it comes down to it, I'd sell off the EI's first I think, but I hope it never comes to that

Re: Detailing of GMP models

But why, oh why, did GMP have to go with 1/35 and not 1/32? I'm afraid they won't look right next to my Corgi 1/32 models. It's a nearly 10% difference in scales, that pretty noticeable.

I don't know, I guess eventually I'll break down too (but only at e-bay discount prices. No way am I paying full price). I'm really tempted by the P-40s first, since I already have a couple of Corgi 1/32 Mustangs, and one more on the way. I really like those... So the P-40s it would be.

GMP aircraft complement the 1/35 scale 'showroom' Minichamps tanks nicely .

Re: Detailing of GMP models

I think that is why GMP went with the 1:35 scale range because of the armor stuff in that scale.
After all GMP does also make cars ...So maybe down the road there is a long term goal with the
1:35 line.

I know, but I tend to display aircraft with aircraft, tanks with tanks. But one more aircraft scale won't do too much harm when I already have 1/144, 1/72, 1/50, 1/48, 1/43, 1/35 (Armor only so far), 1/32, 1/24 (a single Merritt Intl P-51D Mustang, "Shangri-La"), and 1/18.

Hey, Jim, I took the plunge and ordered the GMP "Old Exterminator" on an e-bay store (less than half price compared to normal retail). Eagerly awaiting arrival... This will be my first GMP airplane, although I do have their diorama set already.

Good for you ..I think it's the best P-40 to date....I want mine back from my father after he took it.
