That is really too bad. It also gave every one here a shoch when the news broke in with a building in NYC being hit by a plane.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

It's so sad i heard his twin brother on the news and he just said that Cory's wife and kid were on a plane to Calif when this happened and he was going to have to tell them the news.
God bless.

Re: Yankees Cory Lidle killed in planecrash

As a former CFI, I will say the instructor used extremely poor judgement in allowing the aircraft to go into a dead-end airspace corridor intended for helicopters. In order to avoid an airspace violation, they had to make a 180-turn in a 2000' horizontal space. I've flown the Cirrus before and its not that sporty when it comes to manuevering and its stall characteristics are not as docile as some might think (the spin recovery technique is chute deployment). I strongly suspect that the instructor realized that they weren't going to make the turn in the space available and rather than violating the airpace, pulled it around too tight and stalled it. The irony may be that had Lidle been by himself he probably would have been more concerned with self preservation than an airspace violation, but speaking from personal experience as a CFI, I can say that fear of an airspace violation (and the ruining of an airline career) can overide basic airmanship and common sense.

The FAA also deserves a slap for creating such a dangerous and tempting airspace scenario. Until I looked at the sectional chart this morning, I had no idea that such a wacky VFR corridor even existed. It works for helicopters, but a fixed-wing (especially one moving as fast as a Cirrus) had no business in there.

Re: Yankees Cory Lidle killed in planecrash

On a another note it was just reported that Tyler Stanger the flight Instructor has not taken the Cirrus Design's pilot Certification program that pilots must take yearly to be re-certified.
I think they just got in a very tight spot and could not get out with the amount of room they had to work with and fearing airspace violation. At one point they were at 700ft and going 112 mph as there last radar reading. They hit the building at 500 ft i'm sure he stalled it.
If that had been me i would rather save my life and get hit with a violation.
That area is not a good place to be with a fixed wing aircraft.
God bless their souls.
