Re: Fighter Command didn't save England

I'll be searching for that one Jim.

On the topic of 'Battler Britton', I have a vague recollection of the name, but i don't know what comic he was in. Sounds like a Fleetway hero, but I'm not sure.

I read the ' Hotspur', 'Wizard', ' Adventure', 'Rover' 'Lion' and sometimes the ' Tiger'. I don't think Battler was in any of those. In Scotland, D.C. Thomson and Fleetway publications were the main fare for schoolkids.

As I mentioned, Paddy Payne was the hero of the 'Lion' and I'm sure that it was he who won the Battle of Britain single-handed. he did have a German arch-rival as hero of the skies, partly modelled no doubt on Galland, but Paddy always found a way to outwit him. I wish that I could remember his name???

I remember those, Do you remember the Eagle. It had those superb cutaway drawings. I seem to have some recollection of Battler Britain being published as a small paper booklet. I think I must be of the Biggles generation.

Re: Fighter Command didn't save England

Yes, Jim,

I remember The Eagle. You can pick up copies in some comic book stores for about £3. The isometric, cut-away drawings of ships, tanks, locomotives and cars were great.

The hero of The Eagle was Dan Dare who was modelled on WW2 RAF pilots and whose lingo on the interplanetary radio was decidedly WW2 fighter pilot slang. His arch-enemy was The Mekon who was green and rode around on a little dias which hovered ( I suppose it inspired Chris Cockerell to invent the hovercraft! )

The spaceships all had glassed nosecones inspired by the front end of Heinkels.

cheers,

MoMo

I would recommend Duel of Eagles by Peter Townsend. Nothing like the memoirs of a pilot who was actually there. If I remember correctly, he found the Hurricane to be better than the Spit in the Battle of Britain.

Bugay was the lead historian behind the Spitfire Ace series on History Channel. The 4 part doc. and book are both very good but the best BOB book I own, and I have several, is the little know work of Marcel Jullian. May not be the most long winded and exhaustive account but it is the best read I've found. Can be had on Ebay or used bookstore for a few dollars. Add it to the collection and you will not be sorry!

Re: Fighter Command didn't save England

Well geez with all these books that are out there i'm just going to have to take my pick which one would be the best Information and facts.
Right now i'm leaning towards "The most dangerous enemy" by S.Bungay and "Duel of Eagles" P.Townsend and maybe one more.

I'm reading "The Most Dangerous Enemy" during my teatime in the afternoon at work and i find this book Fascinating.
With a cup of hot tea i feel i'm in the UK.
This is a must read book the author Stephen Bungay has done a magnificent job.

Re: Fighter Command didn't save England

Taking into account what sort of equipment the Germans had at the time it is hardly suitable for a serious invasion.
Just think of the limited endurance of the fighters & the limited capacity of the bombers, the slow Ju52 transport with tiny carrying capacity all this equipment was designed for Blitzkrieg a short sharp shock type of tactic against a relativly defenceless country such as Poland.
It was being an island that saved us.

Lol! Nimrod, that is the most concise and accurate summation of the British situation in 1940 that I have ever heard!
