Flags of Our Fathers Trailer

The trailer is out for Flags of Our Fathers which focuses on the story of the men included in the famous photograph of the flag being raised on Iwo Jima. It is nice to see another movie covering the Pacific so here you go.

Re: Flags of Our Fathers Trailer

I had goose bumps like you wouldn't believe while I watched this trailer!!!!! I can't wait to see this!!!! There are sooooooooooooooo many stories out there from WWII alone that Hollywood shouldn't have any trouble, but they seem to make some real stupid crap!!!! Thanks for sharing!!

Wow, I can't wait to see this. Joe Rosenthal, the Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer who snapped the famous picture, died just last month.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the famous photo of the flag being raised on Iwo Jima reputed to have been 'retaken'/'staged after the fact (i.e. second flag raised) . Not trying to stir up any controversy, merely looking for some clarification .

A smaller flag had been raised earlier. Someone ordered a larger flag that could be seen better to be raised. The photographer barely got the photo of the raising and wasn't sure at the time that he had got it. So he had the marines pose by the flag after they had raised it.

The raising photo of course did come out and quickly became famous. The photographer was asked if it was staged. He had not seen which photo had been used and assumed it was his staged posing photo. So he said "yes it was staged". When he did see the cover shot he realized he had been wrong but it was too late and the rumor of it being staged took hold.

Additionally the scene was re-enacted for the movie Sands of Iwo Jima using the two surviving Marines who had raised the original flag. That was certainly staged and the presence of that staged event in a movie filled with combat film might have added to the confusion.

Re: Flags of Our Fathers Trailer

A tragic side of the story is the fate of one of the men in the photo - Ira Hayes. The notoriety that came to him from the photograph was a curse more than a blessing and he died 10 years later due to alcoholism. It reinforces that truth that not all casualties of war die on the battlefield. Here is a link to the story of Ira Hayes (Johnny Cash also wrote a song about him in case you are interested).
