A Great Read

Since we have some new digs, thought I would start the "good book" thread. I just finished Winston Groom's "1942, The Year That Tried Men's Souls". Great book, about the tough early years of WWII for the allies, and the ray of light they started to see at the end of 1942 as they began to turn the tide, particularly focuses on the Pacific. Great account of the Midway battle, makes my Midway HM Dauntless all the more interesting to me! Anyway, if you want a great read, try this one out!

This isn't a "aviation" based book, but I found it to be an interesting read all the same. Some background info needed: This summer my wife and I took our son to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. If you ever get a chance to go, please do so! It's a sobering and thought provoking place. The book I read is called "They Met At Gettysburg" by General Edward J. Stackpole. It explains the battle and the political considerations in clear, accurate terms. The style is easy to read and it moves well. I now have a better understanding of the price our nation's freedom cost. I also read Michael Shara's "The Killer Angels" that the movie Gettysburg was based on. Also a great read.

Doing what you want is freedom; doing what you like is happiness.

Could probably give you a whole list of good books but try Fortress Malta by James Holland. You'll understand then why the Island was awarded the top British award for civilian gallantry. It is also the only award of that medal that was not made to one individual.

Since I mentioned it on another thread somewhere, I thought I'd bring it to this thread.

Sole Survivor - Torpedo Squadron Eight - Battle of Midway by George Gay Midway Publishers Copyright 1979, 1986 ISBN 0-938300-08-3

From the Preface -

"Many people have studied the battle and written books and articles about it. Naval and government records of both the United States and Japan have been thoroughly dissected and analyzed. In spite of this there are omissions and misunderstandings--even some downright false statements--about the events involving my unit, Torpedo Squadron Eight, during those fateful days. I would like to tell you about what happened the way I remember it."

I've just finished reading "Fighter Boys", by Patrick Bishop. I found it to be a very readable, and at times moving book. The stories of the "boys" who who flew the Hurricanes and Spitfires of the RAF during the Battle of Britain. Highly recommended reading.

I may have posted this in the old MH but I think one of the best books I ever read is An Army At Dawn by Rick Atkinson, the story of the invasion of North Africa. It is the first of his invasion trilogy (the others to follow covering Italy and France) and I cannot wait for the next.

I'm currently reading Overlord by Max Hastings. Not bad for an English author.
