Mustang question

I sitting here looking at my Mustangs and have a really embarrassing question. What is the big air scoop under the wing for? The shape that defines it as a Mustang (I love the look). I know it's a water cooled engine and the scoop under the nose is to cool the oil (I think). I would understand if it was a P-39. I remember looking at the invisible mustang model when I was a kid but still haven't figured it out. Thanks for any help.

Re: Mustang question

It house the oil cooler and engine coolant. You see the radiator is located in the fuselage behind the cockpit and cooling air was taken into the belly scoop under the wing.
Hope that helps.

Re: Mustang question

The way they designed the scoop it actually contributed a slight amount to the thrust with the hot air exiting to the rear and negated any drag.
