Re: The Collectible Diecast Aircraft Hobby...

Before you started collecting diecast airplanes, did you consider yourself a history buff or aviation buff? Both - I have been interested in aviation since childhood and developed an interest in history, politics, world events after getting hooked on the early Tom Clancy books.

Do you read books and magazines about airplanes/aviation/history? Occasionally - I check out books at the local library once in a while and will occasionally buy a book or two. I used to get several aviation mags and World Airpower Journal but have cut down to just Flying magazine.

Are you a pilot or in some other way connected with the field of aviation? Grounded private pilot (house, wife, kids, job = no time or $$), have an aerospace engieering degree, worked 8 years for Pratt & Whitney and Williams International on jet engines, worked on the very early stages of the Eclipse light business jet. Now, I work for a car manufacturer and hate it!

Do you know the histories of the planes and pilots depicted by the aircraft in your collection? If not, do you care? Yes, but it is not my primary driver. I go mainly for planes and cool paint jobs as I collect only 1-2 of each model, particular pilot/history is a secondary concern.

Have you ever collected anything else? Obsessively? If yes to either question, how did you get started? No. I really like wrist watches but my taste way exceedes my income!

Where do you buy most of your airplanes - mortar&brick, internet or other?
Two local vendors, Tuesday Morning, Target (MB only) - I will occasionally order online for deals or hard to find items but really don't like not being able to see the plane before I buy - I have gotten burned a few times.

Have you ever attended a toy show or collectibles show where you saw and/or purchased a piece for your collection? Yes, went to a train show with my sons and found a guy selling the Corgi Graz Austria Ju-87 for $20! No such luck since

Is price an issue with you? Always - If you shop around and are patient, you can save a bundle. I have, however, paid more than I should have a couple of times to get a must have model.

Re: The Collectible Diecast Aircraft Hobby...

Before you started collecting diecast airplanes, did you consider yourself a history buff or aviation buff? I have always had some interest in aviation. I was in the Navy during the early seventies and around aircraft in Europe. My father was on a B-24 crew in Italy – There are a few photos on my web site - http://home.cfl.rr.com/lenswerks/

Do you read books and magazines about airplanes/aviation/history? I like the Osprey series of books. Enjoy watching the Military Channel – Lots of information and film footage of WWII aircraft.

Are you a pilot or in some other way connected with the field of aviation? No.

Do you know the histories of the planes and pilots depicted by the aircraft in your collection? If not, do you care? Yes, somewhat. For me, it adds to the enjoyment of collecting.

Have you ever collected anything else? Obsessively? If yes to either question, how did you get started? Yes, I started collecting Russian cameras after the fall of the Berlin Wall. I have a few hundred. I have collected Ducati motorcycles. I currently have 2 keepers.

Where do you buy most of your airplanes - mortar&brick, internet or other?
Some local, most purchases via internet.

Have you ever attended a toy show or collectibles show where you saw and/or purchased a piece for your collection? Yes, about 10 years ago in Orlando. I was not collecting at that time.

Is price an issue with you? I’ll pay a few dollars more for superior service.

Re: The Collectible Diecast Aircraft Hobby...

I am so sad--maybe even angry. I just spent nearly half an hour answering all the question. Then somehow I was timed out--and all my great recollections and memories were erased, gone into space.

I'll decide whether I will tell anymore about my collection.

What a bummer! I'd like to encourage you to try again. I really like hearing about other's experiences. My wife says I collect collections. I must say of all the groups of collectors, I like diecast aircraft collectors the best.

Re: The Collectible Diecast Aircraft Hobby...

Before you started collecting diecast airplanes, did you consider yourself a history buff or aviation buff? I was a Marine Corp brat, and was intrested in military machinery, mainly WW2,

Do you read books and magazines about airplanes/aviation/history? Yes,

Are you a pilot or in some other way connected with the field of aviation? My brother works for Delta,

Do you know the histories of the planes and pilots depicted by the aircraft in your collection? If not, do you care? Planes I know. Pilots I'm learning more about them since I joined Model Hanger 1.

Have you ever collected anything else? Obsessively? If yes to either question, how did you get started? As a teenager I built model planes and armour. most are gone now from moving. It started with a trip to wal-mart and found P-51 Jumpin Jacques in showcase size and that was about 1 1/2 to 2 yrs ago.

Where do you buy most of your airplanes - mortar&brick, internet or other? Internet, not many hobby stores carry diecast planes around here or they have a very limited selection

Have you ever attended a toy show or collectibles show where you saw and/or purchased a piece for your collection? not yet

Is price an issue with you? depends on the plane. and what i have read about it on the forum
