Re: What's your favorite Hollywood film...

Despite my interest in this mutually shared hobby, my all time Hollywood favorite isn't about airplanes, dogfights, etc. It's the original and never to be topped "Casablanca".

Re: What's your favorite Hollywood film...

All very good selections, but the winner goes to the scene "SPLASH THE ZEROS". Seeing this reminds me of when The Final Countdown first came out, and now I am off to Amazon to order this great movie.

The Great Waldo Pepper - The Final Dogfight

From the words of a witness of the filming of The Great Waldo Pepper:

At the time of the film shooting of this particular movie scene for THE GREAT WALDO PEPPER (near "Magic Mountain" in Valencia, CA), I was a young flight instructor WAY back when...and I would take my students out over the movie set's airfield to watch the progress of the filming (of course out of sight) from above!

Before this movie was filmed, my flying student, Len Hebert, had helped build the reproduction Sopwith Camel that was used in the movie, and Len invited me out to Orange County Airport to Frank Tallman's "Movieland Of The Air" to help out the day of the test flight with the Camel. Upon Frank's first landing, he accidentally ground looped the Camel (with no damage), probably mostly due to his wooden leg! We ran up to the Camel after the dust had cleared, and Frank Tallman said to us, "Yep, it ground loops just like my original Camel did!"

Great memories for me here...

Regards, Gary Sewall
