AH but longer legs give more travel , ideal for deck landings.

Actually not really so, Jimbo...The reason the F-4U Corsair was designed with an inverted gull wing was to be able to accomodate it's huge 13'4" prop without the use of long landing gear struts. Designers knew that with a conventional type wing, the struts would have been too long and weak to tolerate the stresses put upon them by carrier landings. By mounting the gear on the lowest point of the wing, they were able to keep the struts as short as possible.

Indeed was a stupid comment on my part old bean, Tisk .

I just got a mental picture of a plane with a long travel undercart thumping down on deck and promptly bouncing straight off and over the side.

Well I have my off days.
