Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

Perhaps we need a poll! I see that some movie company is shooting a remake of one of my all time favourite movies from the 50s, " The Dam Busters "

I remember watching it in the fetid atmosphere of the local flea-pit, The Calder, and being thrilled as I went in for the bomb run with Guy Gibson in his Lancaster bomber. I empathised with Barnes Wallis as he waited for the news that the dams had been breached.

The new movie, I believe is being made in New Zealand now that all the dwarves and elves have gone back home accompanied by numerous hobbits ( it's the same director maybe? ) But where are they going to get those Lancs? The original film was full of brilliant shots of Lancasters flying low-level over lakes ( or lochs ) and the sound of the four Merlins screaming as they brushed the tree-tops was iconic.

I guess that it will all be worked out in cyberspace and we'll be treated to Lancasters flying at impossible angles, generated by computer.

Who out there would rather see the the two or three remaining Lancs which can still fly?

The Dambusters was influential in George Lukas's first Star Wars film. The ending was inspired by the attacks on the Rhur dams. Read ' Deathstar' for 'Dams'

NOW TO THE QUESTIONS : what is your favourite, all-time war movie? Have you modelled the hardware or bought the hardware? Planes? Tanks? Ships?

I once considered building the cable lift and shloss from ' Where Eagles Dare', but time and cost prohibited that. Anyway, I was a student then and the diorama would have been more like ' Where Beagles Stare'

If anyone out there hears anything about the Lancaster Fest, please post.

Tally ho, Chaps, and good hunting!

I don't know if I have ONE all time favorite war movie. But two that always come to mind when the subject comes up are.......'Patton' and 'A Bridge Too Far'.

Yes, the remake of the Dambusters is to be made by Peter Jackson, of Lord of the Rings and King Kong fame.

Jackson is a well-known warbird fanatic, and owns several WWI biplane replicas, including a Sopwith Camel and a very rare Pfalz D.III.

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

Thanks Spinnaker and Planenuts,

I forgot to say that my all-time favourite ww2 war movie is " The Cruel Sea" starring Jack Hawkins ( I did model a Flower Class Corvette ). It's a brilliant novel which should be read by everyone who thinks war is fun ( by Nichols Monserat )

My overall fav.s have got to be " Lawrence of Arabia " ( I modelled the Rolls Royce armoured car ) and " Full Metal Jacket " ( I worship Stanley Kubrick ) because it reminds us how useless it all is when we resort to hardware.

I also watch " Ice Cold in Alex " a lot and I always have an ice-cold Carlsberg or three in the icebox ready for the vital moment when they reach the bar in Cairo. I down it at the exact moment that John Mills drinks his. Try it! It's called audience participation. ( Yes, I did build my very own model of ' Katie' the ambulance! )

cheers,

MoMo

For what it's worth, Peter Jackson is acting as producer & not director of the Dambusters.

Thanks for the info on Peter Jackson, very interesting. I wonder if he'd adopt me?

As for the movie, I look forward to it down the road!

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

I wish I'd never indirectly referred to 'The Lord of the Rings'!

It's like a drug to some people---hobbit forming!

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

I had no idea this was going on. A must see on the big screen. WOnder if IMAX will host it? That would be sweet.
I do like to buy models I see in movies I guess. I really want an 88 like the one in BofB during the assault on Foy. I have the DB Lanc in 1/144 for the box art as much as the model and bought it right after I saw the film for the first time just a few years ago.
I still want PBY Strawberry 5 from Midway and may not buy one til I get it.

There are a few examples off the top.

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

I was reading somewhere a few months back that Peter Jackson has a WWI fighter plane and he loves aviation.
Having him at the helm for that movie will be great.
