| Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs! Too expensive to go to London MO. I wonder if anyone has thought of asking African Americans what they think about the issue of the dogs name. I bet nobody has. I would like to hear their opinion and I would be of a mind to respect that opinion. | |||||||||||||

| Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs! I've spent hours trawling the net ( on the net ) to discover any news about the new D movie. Can't find a thing. One source claims that the principal photography is happening right now, but I can't find a second source to confirm this. Has anyone else heard anything ? MoMo | |||||||||||||

| Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs! "DAMBUSTERS" This was a good, business-like documentary. Follows the narrative structure of " The Dambusters " closely. I realised at once that I'd seen it before on Channel 5, but I didn't mind. I just sat back and enjoyed it. Many interviews with aged survivors in the later third of the documentary. Most of the first two-thirds were taken up with Barnes Wallis' development of the ideas ( including the impossible 6-engined 'Victory' bomber ) and the setting up of 617. The reconstructions were cheap and cheerful and accurate ( as far as I could tell ) One thing which came through, fine and clear, was that Guy Gibson was not a likeable man. He was a hero, without doubt, but as as 'one of the lads' he was a sad failure. Vet after Vet had not a good word to say about him. They respected his unboubted abilities as a leader, but did not hold back regarding their opinions of him as a human-being. He was just unlikeable. I wonder if this will come through in the new movie ? I doubt it. MoMo | |||||||||||||

Wow, that's quite a revelation. I wonder if this is just another one of those POVs rearing it's ugly head from others with a hidden agenda to promote? At any rate, I don't care so much for the man's behaviour towards his fellow peers and subordinates, but I do care more of his accomplishments.

Yep, have to measure their achievements by what they accomplished. Quite a few outstanding leaders in history have been more than a bit unpopular.

| Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!
Yes, sadly it's true. Many of the old vets were from Canada, the USA, NZ, as well as from the UK. My take is that it's a long time since the events of WW2, and these guys know that they don't have many flying hours left to enjoy. It's now time to set the record straight. As I posted last year, on this thread, Guy Gibson's dog was just as unpopular. Gibson would feed it beer. It would become drunk then proceed to relieve itself on the trouser legs of anyone stupid enough not to steer clear of the wretched pooch. Not only an offensive name, but a canine disaster area with offensive habits and poor potty-training. As I wrote above, I doubt that we'll ever see a realistic portrayal of Gibson in the movie to come but that's no bad thing. Hollywood has a habit of writing the hero, not the person. Look at all the major depictions of George Custer, for example. In " Little Big Man " he is an egocentric half-wit. ( probably the truest depiction ). In " Custer of the West " he is a cold, remote professional soldier who is intent on doing a good job, outwitting greasy politicos and protecting the rights of the Indians. However, the movie we all like best is the one which makes him a hero of the Old West : " They Died With Their Boots On ". In like Flynn ! A real hero. He fights bullies, a disapproving prospective father-in-law, West Point's more arcane traditions, The Civil War, cheating Indian Agents, alcoholism, crooked, bribing businessmen, his superiors and, finally, The Sioux. He dies a glorious death then joins his mates as they ride into the dying sun, and thus to Valhalla. What a way to live and die. That's why we're junkies for the Hero-Myth. Trivia: The filming of the "Last Stand" sequence from this movie involved some 200 horsemen charging around in pretend battle and was so dangerous that one day during filming Anthony Quinn who played Crazy Horse, arranged as a gag for a hearse to show up at the filming location. Goofs: Continuity: During The Battle of Little Big Horn California Joe is shot in the back by two arrows but as he utters his last words to Custer there is only one arrow in his back. more Quotes: [the night before the battle, Custer asks Butler to take his last letter back to Fort Lincoln] Lt. "Queen's Own" Butler: Why are you asking me to go back with it? George Armstrong Custer: Well, for one thing you're an Englishman, not an American. Lt. "Queen's Own" Butler: Not an American! What do you Yankees think you are? The only REAL Americans in this merry old parish are on the other side of the hill with feathers in their hair. George Armstrong Custer: You're probably right about that. But there's 6,000 of them... and less than 600 of us. The regiment's being sacrificed, Butler, and I wouldn't want to see a foreigner butchered in a dirty deal like this.

Hmmm, that's a bit entertaining to me as well. I wonder where the mutt (from the "A Piece of Cake" mini series production of Derek Robinson's novel) got it's bad habbit of peeing on unsuspected rookie fighter pilots from?
