Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

I see that some movie company is shooting a remake of one of my all time favourite movies from the 50s, " The Dam Busters "

I guess that it will all be worked out in cyberspace and we'll be treated to Lancasters flying at impossible angles, generated by computer.

Who out there would rather see the the two or three remaining Lancs which can still fly?

Unfortunately C.G.I. Lancasters is ALL you're gonna get (as far as FLYING is concerened).

The sterile movement of C.G.I. will NEVER replace the real thing (AS CURRENT TECHNOLOGY STANDS), It'll have to improve 100 fold.

Witness the sterile Bomb 'movement' in 'Pearl Harbour'..... PATHETIC.

As far as seeing the two remaining Lancs fly, forget it, DREAM ON.

PA 474 is still owned by the M.o.D.

They won't allow the RAF to use it in ANY 'box-office' filming capacity.
You've got more chance of going to bed with Napoleon's wife.

The Canadians might allow theirs to be used ( so that's 50% of the worlds airworthy poulation included).

& the Panton brothers at East Kirkby, in Lincolnshire may allow their regular taxi running example to be used for ground shots.

Forget any others being bought back to life....& put things into perspective..... it cost £ 750,000 pounds just to re-spar PA 474, back in the late '90's - Three Quarters of a Million Pounds.....paid for by the British Gov't & 'the Taxpayer (so she can display for commemarative events, well into the 21st Century) .

I DREAD/PERISH the very thought of a remake - Music or Films, cover versions are (usually) poor/weak immitations of someone else's talent & skill.

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

Dear Parsig9,

With a bit of luck you may be able to get your 88 in 1.72 scale sometime from Admiral ( mid 2007? ) but you can buy the 88 in 1.32? scale from Forces of Valor right now!

One day a PBY will be seen in 1.72,
On that day the skies will be extra blue.
You have to be patient and waitfor your cue,
Have you the grit to see it all through?

( where's this going, Momo? Damned if I know, Scarlet! )

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

Dear Hornchurch,

you've caught my worse fears. I dread the miscast actors and the revisionist sense of place and time.

Still, it will be fun counting the anachronisms in speech and manners.

i was only dreaming....I know there was only a cat's chance in hell of ever seeing a real Lanc. in this new movie.

Producer/directors like Speilberg could probably do the best job of approaching any worthy tribute to the brave guys who flew the mission.

Hobbits and King Kong in bombers fill me with dread! Are you out there Peter Jackson? If so, promise us that you will respect the real people who sacrificed their all to fight the Nazis and not deliver a spaced-out, platform game, shootemup extraveganza which bears no resemblance to reality!

Over to you, Pete!

Drat, Me 109s at 8 o'clock, must dive.

Dear Hornchurch,

They've gotta keep the music!

Guy Gibson's dog, N****r, has got to go, though. That's one bit of revisionism I would applaud!

BBC: Peter Jackson to film Dam Busters

Filming on the Dam Busters remake is due to start next year

The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson is to remake classic British war film The Dam Busters, he has told film industry trade paper Screen Daily.
Jackson will produce the movie, with King Kong animator Christian Rivers in the director's chair. Jackson said it would be "as authentic as possible and as close to the spirit of the original as possible".
The 1954 film told the true story of how Britain developed bouncing bombs to destroy German dams in World War II.

Mel Gibson was going to direct and possibly act in it
- Peter Jackson

Jackson says he first saw the film as a child and "really loved it".

"There's that wonderful mentality of the British during the war - that heads-down, persevering, keep-on-plugging-away mentality which is the spirit of Dam Busters," he told Screen Daily.

Based on a book by Paul Brickhill, the original film starred Michael Redgrave as Barnes Wallis, who developed the bomb, and Richard Todd as Wing Commander Guy Gibson, who led the RAF bombing mission.

Jackson asked his agent to inquire about the possibility of remaking the film at the same time as he was securing the rights to the Lord of the Rings trilogy in the 1990s.

Richard Todd starred as Wing Commander Gibson in the original

"He came back and said that [film company] Icon had the rights and that Mel Gibson was going to direct and possibly act in it," Jackson said.

"Obviously that didn't happen."

The remake is set to use details of the bombing mission which were still classified at the time the original film was made by director Michael Anderson.

"So much of it was still secret," said Jackson. "They weren't even allowed to show the bomb itself and had to create a fictionalised bomb."
The project is due to start filming next year, with a budget of $30-40m (£16-21m).

Television presenter Sir David Frost will be an executive producer on the movie as he owns the rights to the book.

Jackson's next project as director will be an adaptation of Alice Sebold's novel The Lovely Bones.

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

Thanks Tankguy,

I had a good look at the site. Lots of interesting stuff about the new movie.

I think that the only option for a name for Gibson's dog is Digger!

Anytime the dog's name is mentioned, they should have a Spit making a low pass overhead so all you hear is "..ger"

remake of "Dambusters"

Google it...

Dambusters is being remade by Peter Jackson. I was impressed by how the aircraft looked in King Kong, so I'm looking forward to this!

Angry Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

I view any attempt at a remake of the Dambusters with total dread. Mel Gibson acting in it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God forbid!!! The original movie was made with respect to the memory of those who failed to return. The thought of a Hollywood style remake makes me cringe. However there is nothing I can do about this except hope and pray that at least they stick to the truth and history is not suddenly changed to fit some movie makers idea of "sexing up the plot". I am sorry if I sound a bit scathing but it annoys me the way film makers change history just to make things fit whatever happens to be popular at the time. The original was a fitting tribute to the "Bomber boys" so leave well alone!
