Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

Boyington was made a "technical advisor" to the fairy tale series and perpetuated the myths about the squadron, which infuriated several of the former Black Sheep...In an interview he once referred to himself as a "psychopathic" liar....Draw your own conclusions.....I still enjoy watching the show for the Corsairs though...

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

" Twelve O'Clock High " is a great movie to watch. It ranks as one of the best American war movies ever made!

Gregory Peck is the only American actor who ever came close to the sang froid, stiff upper-lipped approach to war movie acting which the Brits excelled at.

He did portray his character in a somewhat less relaxed attitude to say the Brits in " The Dambusters", but that is a product of the Direction of the movie. I guess that the Director wanted to create a movie which was true to the situation which the USAF found itself in in the early period of their daylight bombing campaign.

Daylight reveals the cracks in the cement which held these brave guys together.

I'm sure that you will enjoy the experience of watching it, although there are bound to be the inevitable, and understandable, inconsistencies and anachronisms. I can't remember though because I haven't watched it for some years.

Happy viewing Starman. Give us the wisdom of your thoughts on the movie when you've done watching.

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

Thanks Starman,

Bring it on....

For those of you who don't know the movie " Twelve O'Clock High ", it was made in 1949. It was filmed in black and white and playing beside Gregory Peck there was Dean Jagger who won the Oscar for Best Supporting actor of 1949.

Henry King was the Director who observed, with a great deal of intelligence, how the war affected the lives of the men who fought it.

There were plenty of B17s about, so you Fly Guys should have a field day if you see it.

The drama and the tension are cranked up as Peck slowly cracks up. Remember that the cast and film-crew were as close as it gets to the reality of the war as anything you will see.

These guys had to fly to Germany and bomb targets knowing that if they only had a long-range escort fighter available that there would be a lot less casualties. Sometimes the attrition rate was as high as 15%. Anything over 5% was woeful and anything over 10% was considered as suicidally unacceptable!

Peck is brilliant in this, which is not surprising if you know his background.

Compare it to " The Dambusters" and also to " The Memphis Belle".

Peck was nominated for Best Actor and the movie was nominated for Best Film.

This is one Hollywood should be proud of.

In many respects, an earlier movie, " The Best Years of Our Lives" takes up the story where " Twelve O'Clock High" leaves off.

I'm planning to write a review of " The Best Years of Our Lives" after my next viewing of it. The trouble is that I can't watch those guys returning from the war, scarred and maimed, without shedding a few tears.

" The Best Years of Our Lives" is, in my opinion, the finest movie about the war ever to have come from Hollywood. It is a real epic at 180 minutes. I dare anyone to watch it and not become riveted to their seats. You cannot help being transported and moved by Wild Bill Wyler's finest work.

The movie was made in 1946. Everyone in it acted their socks off!

It won Oscars for : Best Picture; Best Director; Best Script; Best Music; Best Actor ( Frederic March ) and Best Supporting Actor for Harold Russell who lost both of his hands in a flying accident during the war.

Russell's performance is remarkable. He was an not a professional actor but his work is a fitting tribute to servicemen everywhere who have suffered greatly for what they believed in.

I'll never forget Dana Andrews, with his spirits as low as low can be, in the cockpit of a bomber waiting to be scrapped while he relives the terror of a mission.

More on this later....

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

Twelve O'clock High is possibly the best movie ever made about VIII Bomber Command. It is regularly shown in Air Force Professional Development courses so that various leadership styles can be analyzed.
