Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

Dear Bsmith13,

I don't know why the movie is not available in the U.S. at this time. It has been available in the U.K. for a couple of years.

It is distributed by " Carlton Visual Entertainment" in the U.K. They distribute many old " Rank Orginisation" movies.

If a U.K. version is the only one available world-wide your DVD player would need to have a multi-area option on it. The U.K. is Area 2. Also, I think that your T.V. set would need to be capable of playing the U.K. PAL system. This is highly likely because many U.K. players and T.Vs play NSTC, the U.S. system.

Check out www.carltonvisual.com for their back catalogue movies and you will find " Reach for the Sky" among them.

Also, check out ebay world wide DVDs. You'll find it in the war movies section. You may find a " Chinese" site offering it as a Region O DVD which means that you can play it on any region's players. You take a chance though because although I have bought DVDs from sites there which were very good and from decent prints, sometimes they ain't. You pays yer money and takes a chance!

CAVEAT EMPTOR !

GOOD LUCK,

MoMo

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

I checked out ebay out of curiosity. All the sites were for U.K. Region 2 copies.

The link here is to an Australian site offering a Region 4 DVD.

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

This is weird. I found this site which is registered in Ireland, ships from Miami, USA but still sell only Region 2 editions!

So you can buy " Reach for the Sky " from a U.S. site, pay to a fellow in Ireland and it will only play on Region 2 players!

How crazy is this?

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

Set in the Pacific during World War II the series dealt with a squadron of US pilots known as the Black Sheep .
The best part of the series were the aerial combat sequences.. using a mix of archived material from the war, newly filmed sequences and edited tapings of radio transmissions.
It felt like you were up there in the sky with the squadron as they encounter the Japanese.
On the ground, the dramatic scenes were often done just as well you realize that even though the squadron was made up of misfits they behaved as a unit and worked as a team to make it through whatever came up.
Later episodes in the series added "Pappy's Lambs" - a group of nurses assigned to the island, was probably meant to help ratings, but at the same time the focus started to swing towards them and away from the war.
Which had been the backbone to the earlier shows.
The writing of the series seems to have deteriorated as the show got towards the end of its 2nd season.
The show is definitely worth watching, if nothing else for the Corsairs that were restored to be used on the show were great.
I even had the chance to meet Frank Tallman who flew the corsairs on the show while i was on the lot back in 1976 or 77 when i was a kid.

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

Fascinating stuff, Starman.

This is the way with Hollywood. They create something worthwhile then the creative engine starts to burn out and the only lifebelts available are cliches and contrivances. There is always someone in the background adding soap to the slipway in order to keep the ship of fools going.

Follow the buck.

I will look out for the P.C version : " Naughty Sheep Who Fly " on the web.

I teach film the younger generation, among other things, and always look out for new stuff to refer to.

Thanks for the review/overview.
