Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

I can understand the worries of using that name in the movie, but it is all in how you use it. If you are using it to depict an item in history, then it is understandable. If you are using it for not good uses than not a good idea. Nobody ever got offended when Richard Pryor or Dave Chappelle uses it.

Dear Jim,

Is that a panting dog or a dog panting?

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

Dear Mustangdriver,

I keep making the point along with many others that no-one will give a toss about maintaining the correct word in its historical context if it is uttered in a movie which is aimed at all ages and structured as a blockbuster.

CHILDREN DON'T UNDERSTAND THE NICETIES WHICH WE DEBATE IN THIS FORUM. THEY JUST PICK UP CRAP FROM MOVIES AND PASS IT ON! THE WORSE THE LANGUAGE AND BEHAVIOUR, THE BETTER!

Let's not create a minor epidemic of trash-talk-masking-racism in favour of historical accuracy over one bloody dog with a half-arsed name!

cheers,

MoMo

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

I cannot help but wonder what Guy Gibson would think of all this if he was still with us. The dog was important to him and did form a small but significant part in the film. However I think the topic has been well discussed now and we shall just have to wait and see what the film makers come up with. I fear a travesty is about to befall the Dambusters story but we shall see if I am wrong in good time. I hope I am wrong and that the film is an accurate telling of an amazing event and entertains and educates a new generation.

God Bless America.

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

I think this discussion about the dogs name in the movie has taken it's course.
Time to move on.

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

I agree.

Let's hope that Guy and N----r were reunited in the great Naffi in the sky and that Guy met up with his old mates and also that N----r found a heavenly tree to while away eternity in the Great Beyond.

Meanwhile, Is there any intelligence as to how the script writers, beyond our speculation, are dealing with the matter?

My guess is that since the dog was a kind of substitute for the almost obligatory strand of romance in the 50s version, unless they want to alter history and upset a lot of, now, very old and venerable people, they have to stick with the dog.

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

I hope they actually make the movie, as it would be great to see what they can do with filming the Lancs. As for the dogs name, I am sorry but I don't see a reason to change it because people might be offended. If your offended then you obviously are not interested enought to understand the whole thing. What next? Cover up the pin up girls on restored WWII aircraft? Change the name of the Strawberry Bitch to the Strawberry Gal(which was actually suggested by some idiot). No! We need to have things presented to us as is otherwise we will not learn form out mistakes.

Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

Dear Guys,

Since they're working on a re-make of ' The Dambusters ', isn't it time that we had a slate of other re-makes of classic, British war movies?

Who would like to see a re-make of the following WW2 movies :
  • ' The Colditz Story'
  • ' Reach for the Sky'
  • ' The Cruel Sea'
  • ' Ice Cold in Alex'
  • ' A Town Like Alice'
  • ' Above Us the Waves'
  • ' Against the Wind'
  • ' Albert R.N.'
  • ' The Captive Heart'
  • ' Carve Her Name With Pride'
  • ' Dunkirk'
  • ' A Matter of Life and Death' ( aka ' Stairway to Heaven ' )
  • ' The Silent Enemy'
  • ' Sink the Bismark'
  • ' The Way to the Stars'
I've left out a few obvious ones which could never be remade and included some which look impossible to re-make. Gone are the obvious blockbusters like ' The Battle of Britain' which should rest in peace. Included are impossible projects like ' A Matter of Life and Death' .

Most of the others could be polished up quite easily for a new generation of movie-goers.

Which of the bunch looks the most likely to be given the makeover treatment? Who would you trust to do it? Who'd be in it?

Thumbs up Re: Movies and models and bouncing bombs!

There are some golden oldies there Mo. You brought back a few memories. Ice cold in Alex, a great film. I love those old black and white movies.

Nobody ever got offended when Richard Pryor or Dave Chappelle uses it.

That's true, stang, but there's a difference between when a Pryor or Chappelle uses it and someone like, let's say for instance...Michael Richards....
