Re: Can't let go!

I've yet to sell anything. I've contemplated it. I may even go through the whole thing and move some out at some time, but not yet. (And not likely either knowing me....)

Anything for a weird life.

Re: Can't let go!

A couple of months ago I had the crazy thought that I had far too many models (perish the thought, I know!). I think the feeling was brought on by peer pressure from the wife to "minimalize" .... egad, what's that?!

So, I started pulling boxes out of storage with the thought of dumping all my older stuff that I hadn't looked at for months, and/or years, on ebay....

I open box #1 and I see a Dragon P-47 that I had in mind to sell... after pulling it out and looking at it again, I realized -- "wow, this little baby's cool" ... Then I found my long-buried Gaincorp Sukhois (Gort you should try taking these out of the box, they're even more impressive ) and so on, and so on, as I worked through my storage containers.

The end result, I moved my office to a bigger space in the house, bought a couple cabinets from Ikea, and now most of my "sale fodder" is proudly displayed... (going to post some pics of the new space soon, heck even Mrs. Pappy said "it's cool" )

I am currently selling a few things, but they're mostly dupes I bought back in my "speculating days" (I no longer buy models in 2's )... and I'm divesting myself of some armor, too (no space for armor it seems).

Sometimes I do feel a little silly when visitors come in my new space and look around in disbelief and give me that "what are you, 14?" look. But I just write them off to "not getting it" and then invite Black6 over to view my little museum -- I just wish he could keep his fingerprints and drool off the new glass

Now I'm thinking of printing tickets and charging the neighborhood kids admission....

Very good points there Pappy, my better half thinks I am crazy but I tell her that it could be worse, I don't gamble or chase other women neither do I go out drinking. So a few diecast should not be a problem.
A few is not a problem but you have hundreds of them, (they do like to exaggerate don't they) she said. They are everywhere I look. Then you are a lucky lady was my answer, To tell the truth she is not too intolerant of my hobby.
She was somewhat dismayed to hear that I would never part with any of them. (well I did tell her these were an investment).
Most of my friends think I am weird but I have a friend whose wife collects teapots and has over 70 of them so figure that one out.
Each to their own is my motto.

BTW dont you think these models are like Tribbles, they seem to breed overnight.

God Bless America.

I get that all the time. I stacked my FOV 1/32 Armor collection (and my 21st Century 1/32 Warbird colleciton) against my office walls, floor to ceiling (literally). You should see my kids’ faces every time they venture into my lair.

Then I found my long-buried Gaincorp Sukhois (Gort you should try taking these out of the box, they're even more impressive )

I’d do it, Pappy ... but the little kid in me just loves ‘dem clean MINT boxes. I have yet to remove just one of my models from its box and admire it. Ain’t that a kick???

If and when I ever do sell ‘em (and that’s highly unlikely), they’ll probably be worth more in their MINT boxes. You know -- that fresh, virginal look everybody craves.

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

But... but.... but... then how do you know the models themselves are perfect, I mean some could have production and/or shipping issues, etc. I would recommend at least that you open 'em up "just once" for a look-see when the boxes arrive to ensure they are indeed "mint". Take for example my recent purchase of the new Corgi Galland 109. If I never took it out of the box, I may not have been aware that it was missing its closed gear doors.... Then there's that Gaincorp Su-34 that I never would have known was missing the nose probe... (which I then found in the packaging before I through it out -- not the model box, but the box it was shipped to me in. The probe had broken off during shipment and slipped out of the packaging and into the peanuts... ) Then there's that Dragon P-47 that I wouldn't have known arrived with a cracked canopy. Then...

(Come on Gort -- show us a pic of that office! I, for one, would love to see what a display of boxes looks like )

My kids (twin 5 year old girls) like my displays and respect my "no touch, only look" rule (might be different if I had boys...)

I did feel bad the other day though, one of them knocked a boxed dragon model off of the counter and it landed hard on the floor -- and she was very distraught thinking she damaged one of daddy's models... we opened it together and ensured it was okay, but she was quite upset...

But to get back to the thread... is it "wrong" to be a 14 year old at heart? I think not... And how cool would this hobby be if everyone did it.....

Re: Can't let go!

Everything (190+) I have is on display because I love admiring them, and because they are MEANT to be displayed! Okay I know it takes at least 5 nights every few weeks to dust them but you appreciate their unique qualities when doing so.
IMHO every collection needs a culling every now and again as in nature. Take for example BAE Hawks. Once I got my hands on the new camo scheme fighter the muti coloured trainer and Red Arrows models were sold on.
In the early days I made some mistakes by getting rid of Vibral & Brian Carbury Spitfires, rare EE Lightnings, and ME-109s. Now I spend a bit of time seing what dosen't fit anymore, getting the boxes down from the loft and doing the deal. My den could not ever have sustained 400+ aircraft.

Re: Can't let go!

I have sold many things in my collections over time. First of all, I am a rather "hell bent for leather" type of collector when I first get in the game and diecast was the most consuming interest I have come across. When I first joined original MH forum I had too much disposable income and bought EVERYTHING a fellow member recommended and, for me, it dimished my joy. A few months ago I decided, due to space and desire to enjoy my multiple hobbies (of which my sons' sports, motorcycles and guitars play a large part) I would adopt a more focused approach and sell the pieces I was not in love with to give relief to space and fund my other proclivities. I went from well over 200 pieces to 152, as of today (while never ceasing to add new pieces), and don't regret anything I have sold. I am willing to admit that is probably because I lacked the focus and discipline of most of the members on the forum when I first hit my "giddy" stage but I am happy with my decision.

As to the future, I am willing to bet I am highly unlikely to ever sell another piece of my collection. I am much more focused and enjoy the hobby to a degree I never did when I was chasing the must have item and look forward to the enjoyment I was fortunate enough to find.

Couldn't agree with you more Chiefs 70 .

As with most things in life a sense of 'balance' is required. This hobby can become all consuming if one tries to "have it all and have it now", especially when we are spoilt for choice. You're absolutely correct when you say that buying too much can actually diminish the joy of collecting as it moves away from being a hobby to the equivalent of (expensive) 'grocery shopping', not to mention the disappearing shelf space involved

Like you, I've become a lot more focused and selective with my collecting and am once again enjoying the hobby to its full .

One sheep to rule them all ...
