Tell me more! Personally, I have read some books that lay out a pretty convincing case that Richthofen was shot down by ground fire, and I am convinced, but if it has been proven that he was, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

| Re: Another WWI flying flick? Saw a prety convincing show on Discovery Channel or Military CHannel where they used lazers and other methods to make a pretty convincing case that the Red Baron was actually brought down by ground fire. A lot of people think it's strange that someone who had so many arial victories could be brought down by ground gunners, but look at how many of our aces in WWII were shot down by ground fire in the ending part of the war. | |||||||||||||

| All REVISIONISTS should be hounded to the end! Don't get conned by German propoganda! The Red Butcher was shot down by Brown while Brown was serving in the RFC. The germans tried to sell the idea that their dear Baron was invincible and could only be downed by a silver bullet! " He vas never shot down, he now flies mit der angels! " Der Rot Baron ist kaput! All killers must die( sooner or later ) He was not a nice chap! I hate all this revisionist crap! It's all generated to get you to buy into another book or TV show. Take it from me...I was there ( in spirit with Brown ) MoMo | |||||||||||||

| Re: Another WWI flying flick? Well you will have to wait till late 2007 for the movie to come out. Between now and then they will do a few of rewrites for the movie. This has got to be better then the first red baron movie made in the 1970's called "Von Richthofen and Brown". JP | |||||||||||||

| Re: Another WWI flying flick?
Here's just one of the many reliable sources that he was most likely shot down by Australian .303 groundfire from a machine gun or rifle.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manfred_von_Richthofen Btw, it's only Canadian propaganda that claims Brown shot him down, and he wasn't in fact a Baron

I wouldn't be too hard on Richthofen and Brown. It was Terrible historically, incorrect aircraft(went from a DVIII to a Dr1) but the flying shots, and many of the aircraft, were beautiful.

| Re: Another WWI flying flick? Just saw a documentary on PBS a few weeks ago about this. There was Brown in his plane following Richthofen flying low over a ridge in British occupied territory. Coming over the ridge, the Baron was shot at by Australian machine gunners head on as well as another australian machine gunner off to his right. An autopsy done on the Red Baron after he was downed showed he was killed by a single bullet that entered the right side of his abdomen and lodged in his left shoulder. It was also a clean wound, indicating the shot had come from a long distance (close shots do a lot more damage). I.E., it was almost assuredly the Ausatralian machine-gunner off to the right side (about 500 yards away) that killed Richthofen, since the bullet trajectories ruled out the gunners that were shooting head on and Brown who was behind him. Also, an Aussie engineer who witnesses the moment when the Baron's plane bucked and went into a dive, said the British plane following him never shot while they were both in view. Richtofen managed to land the plane intact. The first Aussie soldier to arrive at the plane to take the pilot prisoner said that the pilot was still alive when he arrived, muttered something in German, then died. The PBS documentary said that a bullet wound of the type that killed the Baron only gave the victim 20 to 30 seconds to live before they died from it (i.e. just enough time for him to land safely, then die). Therefore, it had to be the Aussie gunner, not Brown who hadn't fired on the Baron for at least 30 seconds and probably more like minutes. So who is the one emitting the propaganda? As Joe Friday said, "Just the facts, ma'am." | |||||||||||||
