This is way off topic, but I thought hey, someone may enjoy it and I needed a question answered about the actual memorial. It would be great if Engelbert had a hit with this song, help out veterans and there family as well as be neat to see a song with some substance be a big deal for a legend in his elder years.
Engelbert Humperdink the English Crooner has released a new Concert DVD and CD today at the age of 70. I saw him just this year in Vegas and he announced, a new tribute, to Veterans song based on a a Memorial in Belgium called the Columns of Gray. All the proceeds made off the single are going to charities for Veterans and there familys. The song name is the same. When I saw him do the song , it was amazing, the song itself was good , the visuals were amazing and he sang it from his heart. By the way he still has a very strong voice and he had a big screen behind him when he did the song with visuals of airplanes, tanks, and more in battle as well as a 16 piece band.
The songs writer wrote the song while visiting this memorial and supposedly wrote it while he was there, he told the singer when he gave him the song, he could sense something special at this memorial and the words just came to him while he sat and thought about the sacrifice these men and women had made to freedom.
I had to order a copy as the local store that was supposed to have it, did not get enough thinking it would not be a big seller, so when I got there after work today, it was sold out already.
Here is a press release I found: This summer will see the release of a new DVD and CD, the latter of which promises some surprises. Engelbert Humperdink will also be releasing a single from the DVD called "Columns of Gray," from which he will be donating all the proceeds to veterans and their dependents. The song, written by Mike Egan, was inspired, by the actual columns of gray located in Bastoigne, Belgium, on which a tribute to fallen soldiers is etched in gold.
I also found a review of the DVD already :
Picture quality is very good and so is the Dolby sound. Engelbert still sounds good - at times a little huskier-voiced than in his younger days, but solid - and he looks good too, with his signature sideburns in evidence and almost as long as in the days when he and Elvis were friends and sometimes sang each other’s songs. If you’re a fan of Engelbert’s, or just a fan of solid vocalizations and professional presentations of many familiar songs, you’ll enjoy this concert DVD.
I also wondered if anyone knew more information on this memorial so I could look it up online to see it for myself.
One last thing, I am trying to locate the words to the song, might also be interesting.
