Question Diecast model magazines

Last edited by stalag8611 : 04-16-2007 at 12:28 AM. Reason: typo
I'm curious to know if any of you regulars subscribe to a magazine(s) that specializes in diecast models, regardles of scale or type.
The information I've garnered from this site has been very useful and mostly pretty objective; however, I'm always interested in learning more about this hobby I started late in my life. Fortunately, I have the money to indulge myself and, as my wife says, return to the yesteryears of my mispent youth. Any magazines out there worth reading?

Re: Diecast model magazines

I don't know of any anywhere that specialize in diecast aviation. Model Collector and Diecast Collector, both published in the UK, used to be the best English-language diecast magazines I was familiar with back in the 1990s. I believe both are still being published, but I do not know for certain. Herpa publishes a German language magazine, and I think there are a couple of good German and Italian language magazines focused on diecast automobiles.

Back in the day, there was an excellent little diecast aviation publication called "The Plane News", but it's long gone.

Only one I know of is Diecast X and it focuses mostly on cars -- but there is a small hangar section that covers planes...

Abt that mispent youth. You didn't mispent it. You were too busy working to enjoy some life . It's good to enjoy life.

My advice: If you're looking for great or superb detail go for model kit. I know it's a pain to build them. But as you say you are fortunate enuf to afford such things so you could probably spent extra bucks to get a master modeller do the modelling for you. I suggest to pick the top of the line model(Those top scale, very good in detail, makes for a superb display especially after you encase them in a wooden base acrylic display case with a nameplate). But be warned that they may not feel like a hefty diecast. But then again it's a static model not meant to be carried around. Cheers.

And the magazine mostly list how much they're worth on the secondary market. It's basically a price guide for speculators/investors.

No, this one is a glossy mag aimed at the enthusiast.. no price guide info at all. Some superb model photography, reviews, and history/background of the subjects... here's the web link, I've not seen an issue for a while, though. It came out about a year and a half ago, and it's quarterly

And a llink to a sample review:

There is another mag I've seen called Diecast Digest (I think) that has the price guide angle...

Re: Diecast model magazines

I subscribe to

DCX or Diecast X

and

SMI or Scale Models International

SMI has had some great diecast stuff recently. Last issue was about 80% diecast aircraft.

Cool and thanks, Pappy! I wasn't aware of the magazine publications you mention. I better check these out then!
