I wasn't a member of the old forum, but I am sorry if it is redundant.

Admin's post reminded me of this.

Yeah, I know it's a T-34. Just funning with the 'cast crowd.

I'll go back to being normal again.

Don't worry Ara1. I shouldn't have posted it. Apologies to all.

I just thought it was a neat pic of a Russian T-34 done up in German markings.

Re: German T-34 found at bottom of a lake

A P-38? Nah, an F4U!!

I live next to the deepest lake in the state of Maine. At the bottom of it lie 2 F4U-1 Corsairs belonging to the Royal Navy...They and their pilots (Vaughan Gill and Raymond Knott) have been there since they collided over the lake in a training accident out of NAS Brunswick in 1944.

.A few years ago an outfit called Historic Aircraft Restoration Corp. found one of the sunken planes in July through the use of sonar images and a remote-controlled underwater video camera. The company requested permission to salvage the aircraft but both the British government and the state of Maine objected. A federal judge ruled that the aircraft and their crewmen are to remain undisturbed at the bottom...

Often when I look out over the lake, I think about them.

Re: German T-34 found at bottom of a lake

A similar (but different) scenario occurred here in Missouri with an F/A-18 on a test flight back when McDonnell Douglas was still building them. There is a Boy Scout reservation outside of St. Louis called S-F Ranch and it is the largest Boy Scout camp in the US (in acreage). MD would use the airspace over the Ranch for test flights due to its close proximity to the airfield and the fact that it consists of acres and acres of unpopulated woodland.

There is an F/A-18 somewhere in Nims Lake, the lake where the scouts swim, canoe, etc. Story is, the test pilot pulled the loud handle after the jet experienced engine trouble and punched out too low and at a bad angle. They found the pilot dead with his neck broken, apparently from having slammed into a group of trees near the lake. The Hornet is rumoured to still be at the bottom of the lake.

I gotta tell you, I've been swimming in that lake many times since the incident and it still gives me the chills to think about it.
