Tomcat variations

At risk of being censured in light of other threads , or worse, exposing my utter ignorance , could someone point me in the direction of a website that graphically illustrates, perhaps by line drawings, the primary visual differences between the various F-14 variants?

Re: Tomcat variations

No F-14 site covers the physical differences really. The best I can offer is this: http://www.topedge.com/alley/models/f14mhase.htm A review of Hasegawa's 1/72 F-14 kits. If you read through it, you'll learn a lot.

Model kit reviews are often the best source of info. The only fighter jet I know of that actually has a good online guide to "physical differences between variants" is the F-16, and mainly because there's SO many F-16 types out there.

However---I've been waiting for someone to ask a question like this. If there's a bit of demand, I'll write and post an illustrated guide here. If you'd like an example of my work, here's an early version of my 707 guide: http://airlinercafe.com/page.php?id=72 (I've updated/corrected some things over the years, really need to upload the new version some time)

It'd be like that, but for the F-14.

Re: Tomcat variations

Squadrons Tomcats in action book also has some good profile diagrams of the different airframes. It doesn't show the cockpit differences though which is another give away for the D.

Re: Tomcat variations

Since he asked, I may as well ask if anyone can point me to a similar place for F-4's.

Thanks

Re: Tomcat variations

F-4 variations? Can't think of any site. 5053phantoms is THE site for pics though. http://www.5053phantoms.com/

Here's the F-16 one I was talking about: http://www.habu2.net/vipers/viperblocks/index.html Be sure to read Block 40 carefully, that introduced a lot of features. The early F-16C's (block 25) are nigh-identical to the A's, asides from the tail fin (which ended up being purely a cosmetic difference) It was the Block 40 that introduced a lot of little things that now define what most F-16C's are like, after the Block 30 brought in the new engine, and later the new intake.

For anybody who wants, I'll happily type out a quick list of what to look for, if you want to "get started" looking at some pics etc. I can do the F-4, F-8, F-14/15/16/18.

Detailed, illustrated guides take me hours of work, so I'll only do it if there's demand. (With the F-14 such a hot topic lately, I might go ahead and do one for it anyways)

Count me in, for one, as someone who would greatly appreciate this type of reference, at least for the F-14.

Thanks to everyone else for the references.

David, I suspect that guides like these would be a valuable resource and much appreciated by forum members ... we look forward to seeing them .
